‘I hear rumour has it that Debra Jennings was pulled in for drink driving on the school run yesterday? Seriously, some people shouldn’t be allowed to give birth,’ DC Holder said, eyeing Lucy, who was so engrossed in reading over the paperwork in front of her that she hadn’t seen her colleague make his way over to her desk.

He noted how quickly she shoved the papers back inside the file now that he was standing beside her.

‘Yeah, well I expect that got everyone’s tongues wagging,’ Lucy said with a shrug, not wanting to draw too much attention to the incident, as she played it down. DS Morgan had insisted that if they were going to go ahead with an undercover operation that they weren’t even going to enlighten the team about it. And that included Holder. Not yet anyway. ‘Though as it turns out she hadn’t touched a drop. She passed the breathalyser and was free to go home.’

‘So, the arresting officer made a mistake? She wasn’t charged?’ Holder said, narrowing his eyes. They all knew how badly their sergeant wanted Gerard Jennings, but deliberately targeting his wife with false allegations would only jeopardise their chances of actually catching the man red-handed. Mistakes like this would only alert Gerard that he was on their radar. That they were watching him.

‘The officer had reason to believe that she was driving under the influence. He said she was driving erratically. “She was all over the road”: his words. Though, I guess that’s just women’s driving for you though, huh!’ Lucy said with a tight grin, playing on an old gripe she held with her fellow co-worker for previous comments he’d made about her own driving when she’d first joined CID.

‘Hey, I’m the last one to cast aspersions on women driving,’ Holder said, holding his hands up playfully, as if to declare a truce.

‘I bet she wasn’t happy about being dragged in here?’ he said, lingering around the desk, despite Lucy continuing to complete the last of her paperwork, so that she could finish for the day and get off home. He didn’t seem to take the hint that she didn’t want to talk about Debra Jennings.

The less she said to Holder the better, because Lucy knew that the chances were, he’d be able to read her if she was keeping something back from him. They were detective constables. That’s what they did for a living.

‘Wasn’t happy would be the understatement of the year. She gave us a right mouthful about harassing her, and threatened to get a solicitor and start legal proceedings against us if we pull her in again under false allegations.’

‘You dealt with her? Bit of a menial task for CID, wasn’t it?’ Holder said raising his eyes questioningly.

‘Yeah, myself and DS Morgan had to smooth things over. Like I said, she was threatening all sorts and we’ve got surveillance on Gerard, so we didn’t want that jeopardised.’ Lucy placed the file she’d been looking at in her desk drawer and stood up.
