CHAPTER 16

A Game of Telephone

Livingston, TX

the call came in just as Meredeth steeled herself and took a bite of the eggs that sat wilting on her plate. She hadn’t been able to convince herself that eating the floppy, greasy bacon would do her any good, but she had downed a piece of rye toast with heavy butter.

She picked up her phone from where it lay next to her silverware and accepted the call. “This isn’t my fault, Jim.”

“No, it isn’t,” said Jim McCutchins. “But, your fault or not, it has reached the ears at the top of the totem pole.”

She groaned and massaged her temples. “Not another letter.”

“No, no. Nothing like that, Meredeth.”

“Then Bobby and I are off the case?”

“No one in the Hoover building blames you. Evidently, this AP story was published early this morning. The source, of course, is listed as anonymous. But there are plenty of details that the AP held back in an effort to give us something to verify the claims with.”

“From what I just saw from the talking heads, it seems pretty accurate.”

“Yes, that was the conclusion drawn on Pennsylvania Avenue, too, based on the preliminary report you filed yesterday afternoon. I want you to know, Meredeth, that I think you were right. We shouldn’t allow someone like this to manipulate the Bureau.”

Meredeth sighed. “But…”

“Indeed.”

“So, I’ve been overruled.”

“You’ve been overruled,” agreed Jim. “But as this guy can obviously get messages out of the prison, you and Bobby won’t be escorting this guy on your own. The risks are just too great. The Bureau is dispatching an HRT unit to provide protection, and we’ve already set up local coverage with the Texas Rangers. If this knothead does have plans for something malign, he won’t be able to accomplish them.”

After another mighty throb, Meredeth’s headache retreated a little. “Jim, I’ve got a funny feeling about this one. This guy is… Well, I don’t know what this guy is. He denies any affiliation with Ankou, but that feels like a lie. I can’t put my finger on any behavior or statement on his part that backs up my feeling, but it’s there, nonetheless.”

“Kevin and his team will be there, Meredeth. They will— “

“Kevin?”

“That’s affirmative. His team is next on the rotation, and his duties at the Academy can be transferred to someone else for a few days.”

“But— “

“Meredeth, it’s out of my hands. Our betters in the Hoover building have already decided everything. You and Bobby are to maintain close contact with the prisoner, along with anyone the Rangers provide. Kevin and his team will maintain the perimeter and overwatch on your prisoner. They have an automatic green light should Cash try anything.”

Meredeth shook her head and rubbed her eyes. “I don’t like this, Jim.”

“That’s exactly what Kevin just said to me. The only difference was, he didn’t want you to go along.”

“Yeah,” she said with a sigh. She suddenly felt as if she hadn’t slept a wink the night before. “I will shoot this guy down like a dog, Jim, before I let him escape.
