By now it was nearly noon. A lifetime later, Angelo thought. What ecstasy. What bliss. The ache in his butt as he walked with Jason through the hotel lobby and out the front door was a pleasant reminder of their lovemaking. No connection existed between their previous life and the life they lived now. Suffused with honesty and passion. Their sex life careened into uncharted territory with a strangeness that was as bewildering and confusing as if they had been driving in a strange country after sunset. The peril seemed at once exciting and dangerous, and erotic...like a winding road that led to who knew where.

“What do you want to do today, my love,” Jason asked, kissing Angelo’s knuckles as he pulled their clasped hands to his lips.

“I’m hungry,” Angelo said. “I know this diner that may or may not seat us.”

“Sounds like a challenge I’m up for.”

Ready to face a world at odds with them, Angelo saw it, and a sinking sensation hit him. “Oh, no.” The Ford Crown Victoria was parked across the street. Detective Town wasn’t glaring at him from the driver’s seat; he was standing beside the car as if he had been waiting for them.

“What’s the matter?” Jason asked.

“We’ll see.” Angelo walked directly toward him. “Detective Town, how can I help you today?”

He squinted at Jason. “Is this your NYPD blue boy?”

“Officer Jason Murphy,” Jason replied with a twinge of sarcasm. “At your service.”

“Get in,” he told them. “Let’s go for a ride.” Town opened the back door.

Angelo and Jason exchanged wary glances. “Do we have a choice?” Jason asked.

“Just get in the fucking car.”

Boniface sat in the passenger seat but failed to acknowledge them. Town threw the car in gear and drove along 7th Street. Angelo hoped Town planned to circle the block. Within minutes, the car got on the 110. “How are you enjoying your stay in Los Angeles?”

“It’s been interesting,” Angelo replied. “Met some interesting people. Present company excluded.”

Town quirked an eyebrow at Boniface. “What did I tell you?” He glanced at Jason in the rearview mirror. “You should teach your friend to respect authority. I don’t take kindly to disruptors.”

Angelo sensed the strain between Town and Boniface, whose eyes never veered from the road ahead.

“Well, you won’t have to worry about either of us after today.” Jason offered Town a broad smile. “We’re heading back to New York tomorrow.”

“Finally, someone is thinking rationally,” Town said. “If only you had come earlier, Officer Murphy. Maybe things wouldn’t have gotten to this place.”

“Well, I’m here now,” Jason said.

“I was brought on to solve this series of unfortunate murders,” Town said to Jason as if he was the only person in the car. “I believe these murders were brutal and senseless, but these three young men were working in a dangerous industry. If that’s what you want to call it. The circles they ran in often had them consorting with the lowest of the lows.”

“Lowest of the lows,” Angelo repeated. Jason gave his knee a squeeze to silence him.
