Extraction

Naples, Italy

Lin’s mouth opened to scream, but no sound came out.

Rebecca grabbed Lin’s head and slammed it into the wall as she dropped the silencer to the floor, leaving it there to do its thing.

Lin came away from the wall, her nose bloody. Rebecca backhanded her across the face with her fist, and the woman dropped to the floor without any noise whatsoever.

Rebecca stepped over to her as Lin rolled onto her back, her hands up to protect herself. She was no fighter, which was a relief after that fight in the lift. She didn’t fancy another dagger in the leg.

Rebecca punched Lin once more, knocking her head back against the floor. Lin’s hands dropped, going limp as she visibly relaxed, her eyes rolling back in her head.

With her subdued, Rebecca pulled the mind reader from her bag and folded it out before putting it in place on Lin’s head. Lights on the device lit up, and through her Aetheric glasses, Rebecca could see the Magical energy swirl around the item and reach into the woman’s mind.

Rebecca picked up the silencer from where she’d dropped it, and briefly considered turning it off, but then thought better of it. If Lin woke up, she’d make a fuss.

Returning to kneel by Lin’s side, Rebecca waited for the device to finish its read and implant the false memory before she pulled it off the top of her head.

She’d been in here a little longer than she’d like by now and knew she needed to get a move on.

Placing the device back in her bag, she killed the silence effect, only to suddenly hear knocking on the door.

“Hey, are you okay in there?” someone said.

Shit, she cursed silently to herself. Looking up, she eyed the window. It was small, and at that moment the shadow of a guard passed by the patterned glass window. Too risky, she thought.

Looking around, the room wasn’t a small one, with plenty of space to move around. She couldn’t be caught in here with Lin like this, it would ruin the memory that the device had implanted in Lin and would cast suspicion on her.

Rebecca issued a command to her stealth suit. It shifted over her skin, transforming back into the full fitted bodysuit, and as soon as it was done, her Ghost Camo activated, turning her almost entirely invisible.

She pressed herself up against the wall, close to the door, and with a steadying breath, called out.

“He… help. I need a little help,” she said, and then waited.

“Hold on, let me get someone…”

“No time, just kick the door…” Rebecca answered.

There was silence on the other side of the door for a few moments, and then a sudden thud against the wooden door.

After two more thuds, the door slammed open, and three people rushed in to see Lin unconscious on the floor.

Rebecca pressed herself against the wall, watching for the first gap in the people to make her escape, and as the third person entered, the opportunity presented itself. She rushed out, stepping through the door just as another bystander stepped toward the bathroom.
