The Terms Change

They hurried into the office and John closed the door, shutting out the raucous noise from the bar. Jessie took a deep breath, tapped the screen of her phone, and sat it in the corner of John’s desk.

“Hello?” she said.

“What the hell, Jessie? I thought we had an understanding.” The voice was calm and even. Deep in timber with measured tones. Jessie thought it sounded like the same one she had spoken with before, but she couldn’t be certain.

She swallowed a lump in her throat. “Did we? Because I thought you wanted me to retrieve something for you. I was doing my job. Your guys crashed the party.”

“And had you let them do their job you and your friend would be sitting in front of your fireplace sipping wine right now.”

“Where is she? I swear, if you’ve hurt her in any way, I will hunt you down and I promise you will beg me to end you by the time I finish with you.” Heat colored her face and her tone.

“It’s not too late to save her. Honor the deal and bring the boy to us,” the man said.

She knew he was lying, but also realized there wasn’t much she could do about it.

Kevin’s eyes widened as he stared at Jessie. Slowly, he backed away from her until his back hit the office door.

“Bringing him to you won’t do any good, because he doesn’t have the drone.” She looked at Kevin and held her finger up to her lips. The panic in the boy’s eyes told her he was close to bolting. “You should be thanking me.”

There was a pause before the man spoke again. “And why is that?”

“Because your goons would have killed him, and you still would not have had the drone. We found him first, but he had already hidden the drone and whatever is on it. Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t copies floating around somewhere.” She let that hang in the air. “He’s a lot smarter than he looks.” She locked eyes with Kevin, pleading with him to trust her.

“Assuming you’re telling the truth, what are you doing to find it?” the man asked.

Jessie let her voice drop in tone. “Oh, he’ll talk. I’ll get it out of him.”

Silence again. “And why should I believe you?”

“Because you still have my friend,” she said. “And I care a hell of a lot more about her than I do some kid I just met.”

“Tell you what. Why don’t we still make the exchange. Bring the boy to us at the agreed upon time and site and I’ll let you have your friend. I have a feeling I can make this kid talk faster than you can.”

Jessie huffed at the phone. “No way. You think I’m stupid? I hand him over and then you’ll kill him and my friend. I’ll get the drone for you. That gives me something concrete to trade.”

“And what’s to stop you from blackmailing us?”

“Because you only have one thing I want.
