I was up early after a restless night, punctuated by the increasingly disturbing corridor dream. Food didn’t really hold any appeal, but I made myself force down a bowl of porridge anyway. What I was planning to do wasn’t something to attempt on an empty stomach. It occurred to me as I mechanically chewed my breakfast, that I hadn’t done a great job seeing my family lately. I hadn’t seen Em since Grace’s birthday in August, in fact. Alright, I’d had a lot on my plate and Emlynn can be difficult to pin down because she travels a lot due to her sparkling musical career. Plus she had been cutting that collaborative album with our brother-in-law, Nick, and Goth rock band, Blood & Chocolate. Meanwhile I was a full-time physics research assistant and lecturer and a part time cryptozoology consultant. Time had flown. I hadn’t made it to the last few family Sunday dinners in Arncliffe. No, I realised with a flash of guilt, ever since I’d started seeing Steve, I’d been unwilling to share my weekends. Of course, if I’d just gone ahead and introduced Steve to them as my boyfriend, I wouldn’t have had to choose. But I’d been happy with the way things were. Happy enough that I just hadn’t noticed I was being a crap sister and daughter. If Grace hadn’t driven up on her day off, I wouldn’t have seen her either. I needed to reshuffle my priorities.

I called in sick to work, saying I had some sort of stomach flu and left instructions for Kevin on what to do in the lab. Normally, I would have felt bad about abandoning my classes, but the lessons were available online and if I had to spend individual time with each of my students once I got back, I’d do it.

Emlynn’s approach caused a silent ping on my internal radar long before I saw her car turn the corner on to my street. I was out of the front door and running down the steps before she’d even finished parking.

Em got out of the car, her hair a wild tangle of glossy dark curls, green eyes burning with determination to do battle with whatever threatened her little sister. Oh God, I’d missed her so much and I hadn’t even realised. And then her aura blazed in my Veil Sight and I pulled my headlong charge short. She shone as a figure of pure, brilliant silver. That was the basic colour of her aura. But something had changed. The way the light wrapped around her, streaked with gold at her midriff. And a rich deep, protective green.

“Amy?”

I blinked and it was gone. But I knew. Emlynn had been keeping a secret of her own. One which meant I could never ask her for the favour I’d intended. How could she not have told me? In fact, how could she have possibly hidden it from me? Something this huge should have registered.

“Amy, you’re r-really freaking me out,” Emlynn said calmly.
