Chapter 20: That Juju Feeling

Belle found herself in the passenger seat of Eddie’s black Jeep Wrangler heading out of the school parking lot and onto the main road. She toyed with the cross in her hands, the rosary hanging around her neck again at Eddie’s insistence.

“W-w-won’t we g-g-get in even m-more tr-trouble?” She asked, her jaw practically vibrating. Without the adrenaline rush of the brawl they’d just escaped from, the wet chill had soaked clear through to her bones now.

“Change of plans.” He pulled over beneath a cluster of tall trees. “We’re not going to make it back to your house for your change of clothes before hypothermia sets in. Come on.”

He climbed out and headed towards the back of the Jeep. Belle followed, feeling like a walking accordion.

“It’s n-not th-that b-bad,” she tried to argue.

The long window of the trunk opened upwards while the bottom half was a door that pulled out sideways. He rummaged around until he found what he was looking for. It was her purple Girl Power t-shirt.

He started peeling off his sweater, but the undershirt started lifting up as well, revealing pristine washboard abs.

Without thinking, she reached out a hand and touched his stomach, amazed that he didn’t have a scratch on him after she saw the creature rake its claws into him over and over.

And his skin felt like fire.

He recoiled at her touch, and she jumped back. “S-s-sorry.”

“Your fingers are like ice.”

She wanted to explain why she’d touched him, but that would require too many words for her useless mouth to form.

He’d already taken his sweater off and tossed it next to the purple shirt. He was left in a black fitted, short-sleeved undershirt.

Hellooo biceps! We meet again.

That’s it. Her brain was already fully hypothermic.

He gestured toward the shirt and sweater. “Change,” he said gruffly. He turned around and created a space of privacy for her. Hedged into the corner of the open trunk, with the door, dark-tinted windows, and the Eddie-wall, it did seem like she couldn’t be seen by any onlookers.

Her wet sweater landed with a slap in the trunk. The buttons on her blouse became troublesome with her trembling fingers. “B-b-buttons,” was all she could manage as a complaint.

“Need help?”

“N-no.” She blushed. “In your d-dreams.”

“Indeed.”

She ignored that.

Finally, she had the dry shirt and sweater on, but the wet hair, undergarments, and pants still had her trembling. “D-Done.”

He turned around. “You’re still shaking.”

His eyes were luminous and starting to take on that predatory look. It reminded her of that Eric Carmen song, “Hungry Eyes.”

“But not as m-much. Th-Thank you.” She bunched the oversized sleeves in her hands and hugged herself. The sweater came down to her knees.

His eyes glowed more intensely as they trailed over her, probably enjoying the sight of her in his clothing.

An icy shiver suddenly convulsed through her. Dagnabbit, she was still freezing. Eddie looked comfortable in his thin t-shirt and exposed skin, as if the cold didn’t affect him as much as it did her. Maybe Jäger body temperature naturally ran higher?

She could use some of that right now.
