TWENTY-FIVE

Leon had spent the better part of the last hour with the weed sprayer attached to his back. He’d walked the perimeter of the vast estate, occasionally spraying the odd dandelion or weed that had sprouted up in the lush grass. All the while, however, what he was really doing was getting the lay of the land. Studying the entrance and exit points and noting where security ran their patrols.

The place was buttoned up tight, just as he suspected. Most of the security men were protecting the estate’s perimeter. There was nobody near the house itself.

Currently, he was inside the flower beds that snaked around the perimeter of the mansion. The first floor was elevated approximately eight feet above ground. As you approached the double front doors, you ascended about ten steps. Upon first glance of the property, the estate seemed to hover slightly above the surrounding landscape.

As a result, the first-floor windows were well above Leon’s height, so he operated under the radar in the bushes below. For precautionary measures, though, in his right hand he held a large box filled with what looked like fine sand. The box had a picture of a spider and a scorpion, each with a red circle and a strikethrough around the respective nuisances. With the scoop in his left hand, Leon dug it into the box and then troweled a thick line of the sand along the base of the mansion.

Except it wasn’t sand or bug deterrent. It was ammonium nitrate powder.

It took him an hour and a half to lay down the powder. The only part of the estate that he didn’t cover was the front doors. Next, he grabbed the rake from the truck and got to work.

At this point, Leon was visible, and he felt the guards’ eyes on him from time to time. However, he was working just like any gardener would, so no eyes lingered longer than they should.

The flower beds around the mansion contained different trees and bushes of various sizes. Within the beds were lots of dead leaves and broken branches, which Leon raked into small piles about every ten feet or so. After he finished that project, Leon went back to his work truck. On the tailgate, he setup the small hibachi. He dumped a huge pile of charcoal briquettes into the grill and then doused them with an excessive amount of lighter fluid.

He lit the briquettes and jumped into the truck bed. Leon swapped out the canister of weed spray with a backup canister from one of the garbage cans. Inside that canister was gallons of lighter fluid.

Working quickly, Leon used the sprayer wand and doused the edge of the grass that butt against the flowerbeds. He also soaked the small piles of debris he’d raked up and the base of the two wooden front doors.

Since the estate was on lockdown and sealed up tight, he didn’t have to worry about the smell wafting through an open window or door. If the perimeter
