After he cleaned them, they held one another. Although Mya’s entire body was relaxed, her mind was active. She’d enjoyed everything Erik had done to her, but something about his ferociousness, his desperation to remind her who she belonged to when they both knew the answer, made her concerned that something else was weighing on his mind.

She turned in his arms, knowing that he was awake as she was. Mya ran her hand over his cheek and his eyelids fluttered from her touch. He grabbed her hand and kissed it softly, causing her to sigh.

“Did something happen?” she asked.

When his eyes opened, she knew she didn’t need to elaborate. He kissed her hand once more and drew her head to his chest.

“You are my heart. You are the very breath in my body, what completes my soul, and I know that you have been unhappy because of me.”

“Erik—”

“Please don’t,” he whispered. “You have been waiting for such a long time for me. We have been waiting for such a long time, and it’s not fair to either of us.”

He cupped her cheek and tilted her head to his. “You know I want this, don’t you? That I want you? I want to shout to the entire world that you are mine. I want to take you with me on trips and to events without having to make an excuse as to why you are there.”

“I know,” she whispered, squeezing his hand. “And I know why we can’t. I just…”

“I wish it could be different too, fagr skjaldmær min, and I promise I am trying to make it so. That is why I keep going with your brother to these council meetings. We are so close. If tomorrow’s goes well, it will be done.”

Her head shot up from his chest. “Really?”

Erik smiled and kissed her forehead. “Yes, and there are so many plans I have made for us, so many surprises that I can’t wait to show you. I want to be with you, and this council is going to make it happen. Please, just give me one more day.”

She cupped his face. “Erik, I will always wait for you. Even if I don’t like the circumstances, I will never stop waiting for you. I love you.”

He kissed her so gently, so tenderly, with so much love and affection that she felt covered in it from her head to her toes. So why did she want to cry?
