“Don’t you boys be getting any ideas,” the vendor growled.
“Let me set the clocks back to the times of yore!” Brent begged, realizing for the first time that he was very drunk.
“Time is a one-way street, gentlemen. And it only runs faster as you get older, which you young ones will learn soon enough.” He unlatched the plywood door that covered the opening of his vending booth and pulled it down over everything inside. “If it’s time you want to capture, capture the time you’re in. It ain’t coming back.”
This seemed so wise to Brent and Bobby that they begged the old man to join them for a drink. He only smiled sagely, snapped the padlock home, and wished them a good night.
“You know,” Brent predicted, “if we come back here next year, I bet we’ll never find his cart again. He never really existed. Just a wise apparition, like hearing the wisdom of God.”
Bobby threw his arm around Brent’s shoulders. Only little pockets of people were left on the sidewalks from the crowds earlier in the day. Their bodies bumped and swayed against one another, and Brent felt as if his legs were holding up the both of them.
They stumbled upon the gazebo in the town square. Bobby kicked back and stretched out, feet splayed out as if he were in his own living room. He looked pleased with what they had done, another day well spent. He poked Brent in the gut.
“It’s so good to talk to you, man,” he said. “We get along so easily. I mean, I haven’t seen you in, like, ten years, and it’s like no time passed.”
“True friends,” Brent murmured.
“It’s not like that with my wife, man. Talking to her is such a chore.” He sighed. “We really were not meant for one another.”
Bobby looked yearningly at Brent.
Brent flushed. He was flattered but uncomfortable. This is booze talking. Nothing worse than when the booze gets all affectionate.
Bobby slid closer so that his hip was pressed up against Brent’s side. He took Brent’s hand, gazing into his face from two inches away.
Then, inevitably, Bobby kissed him full on the lips. With boyish confidence, he licked his own lips and said, “I could get used to that.”
He’s still a little teenager, a little flirt. A boy who never failed to be excited that he made it to first base.
The kiss did nothing for Brent.

That wise man was right. Time was all one way.
Bobby said, “I love you, man.” And then he was gone into the night.
