Asb’el met Stride before he descended. He seemed at a loss for words. Stride waited, his sword dripping with the bodily fluids of dead demons. “Say it, Asb’el.” He rolled his eyes.

“Akakios is not the heir.”

“He is your heir. He belongs here in the underworld with his father.”

“No. He will be raised by Tressa and Étienne in a human world.”

“A demon child in the hands of an angel—it’s unspeakable.”

“Then,” Stride said, brushing him aside, “don’t speak of it.”

“Even his name is…‘ not evil’?” Asb’el was on his heels.

“You have me. You don’t need my son. Besides…Asb’el, let’s not forget you’re a cross between angel and demon.”

“To some,” Asb’el countered quickly.

“Yes! To some, you are an angel, to others a demon.”

“That’s why I wouldn’t wish this confusion on any child…especially a baby.”

“He stands a chance this way.” Stride knew he’d made the right decision. He put his hands on Asb’el’s shoulders. “I love two people in this life. One of them is my son. I was raped by a demon, Asb’el. I won’t let that happen to Akakios.”

Asb’el held up a hand. “You have to make others.”

“One wife is enough. I’m mated. I cannot take another.”

“That brings you great satisfaction, doesn’t it?”

“Some, yes.” He grinned. “I shudder when I think of her great, pendulous breasts.”

As they descended further into hell, Stride was aware of the faces hidden among the rocks, peering at him with…what? Disappointment? Awe?

His father chastised him as soon as he encountered him, just as Stride had known he would.

“Not now, Father,” he said. “If you want to help me, then call a meeting. I will address the minions. Now.”

A little while later, Stride stood at a podium surrounded by various species of demons.

He bid them to be quiet as he began to speak. “For better or for worse, I am the lord of the Underworld. I will tolerate no disobedience. All decisions will be made by me and will be final.” He glanced at Asb’el. “I am disbanding the council.”

There was a great gasp in the hall.
