Chic Sale (1885–1936) specialized in bucolic humor, playing various types of country characters (often old). If his creations had anything in common, it was a healthy and earthy interest in outside lavatories. In 1929, he published a 31-page book, The Specialist, ostensibly the story of Lem Putt, “the champion privy builder of Sangamon County,” which sold more than two million copies. He might well be considered the originator of the bathroom humor that became popular in the 1980s.

Olga Petrova (1885–1977) was a multi-talented feminist voice, active in legitimate theater, silent films, and vaudeville. She came to the United States from her native United Kingdom in 1912 to star in Jesse L. Lasky and Henry B. Harris’s unsuccessful New York cabaret the Follies Bergere. A year later, Petrova was a major success in vaudeville with her recitations, songs, and playlets. She made her Palace debut in 1919.
