Rebirth. Sacrificing one thing to obtain another. Transformation. Circumstances literally turned on their head.

"You see?" Vivian said. "That's exactly what's happening right now."

Dane nodded, handing the document to Penny, who read through it again, silently.

Wetting her throat with iced tea, Dane asked, "Did Nana create that urn chest? Or is it something that's been used before?"

Camilla checked with the others visually, then said, "We've never seen anything quite like that. She must have spent a good deal of time creating it and the spells to go with it. She'd been planning for her own death for a while, it seems."

"What we do know, however," Gemma said. "Is that the urn chest was a Power Vessel. A place to store energy. Beatrice could have done a Binding, which would have made your powers dormant, but then you would be at risk. The dark forces might have tried to remove them from you, and it probably would have meant your deaths. So instead, she created the Power Vessel to store them until they could be transferred properly, and with the most power all at once."

Camilla poured the tea from the tiny clay pot into her cup. "With what we've learned thus far, we believe that Beatrice was probably on our side. All indications are that she was protecting both of you, and now, has made sure that three generations of powers have been transferred to you two, because you're going to be needing them."

"She wanted you both to take your rightful places in this family." Gemma was uncharacteristically somber.

"Why does that feel a little ominous?" Dane asked.

Camilla sighed. "Because it is."

Vivian looked up from her tarot. "But there's every reason for hope, according to the cards. As long as both of you take command of your powers." She held up the Strength card.

Sipping tea, Camilla said, "Toward the end of the journal, Beatrice became a bit fragmented..."

Penny said, "Yeah I don't think we'll be posting a glowing review On Goodreads. Although as apocalyptic scenarios go, it's pretty intense."

"Intense enough to tell us that she was losing her footing. It had to be incredibly taxing to do what she was doing."

"What do you mean?" Dane asked.

Gemma answered. "She was basically keeping all the dark powers that be away from you. Away from all of us. After a while, that burden will wear you down. She was nearing the end of her natural life, anyway, so doing this probably took a lot out of her. Eventually, it probably killed her."

A pregnant silence held tight to those around the table. Dane found herself becoming more and more forgiving of Nana's caustic personality. The woman was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. "How does all this work? What is it we're supposed to do?"

"Think of it like a seesaw," Gemma offered. "On one end are the agitators, the ones who want power and want to destroy things that threaten it.
