Chapter Fifteen

Bobby

I STARED AT HER, GOING over the paper in my head, line by line. Nothing could explain her reaction. It was a research paper.

“Amy?” I said her name, waiting for her to tell me what had pissed her off.

I knew her well enough to know she wasn’t going to sit quietly in the corner or tell me everything was fine. She would tell me exactly what it was that had pissed her off—eventually.

“You took something personal from my life and used it to get a good grade. You asshole.” She hissed.

My mouth fell open. “What?” I asked.

“You used my story. That was personal.”

I shook my head. “I didn’t use it to get a good grade. Your story had the personal touch, the human element to the castle. That’s what made it special.”

She sneered at me. “I suppose you expect me to take you all around Edinburgh and pour out my heart so you can use my stories to get the best grades in the class.”

“No! I don’t know why you’re so upset about this. It wasn’t all that personal. You said you went with your mom. I’m sure plenty of other people visited the castle with their parents,” I argued.

She was glaring at me. “It isn’t the same. You should have asked me.”

“I’m sorry you’re making this into something it isn’t. I was thrilled with your story. It was special. I liked the idea that the castle is still making memories for this generation. I wasn’t trying to hurt you or steal your memory to get a good grade. It was really just about making it more special because of how something so old is still playing a huge role in the citizens of the city today,” I told her, hoping she would relax a bit.

“You don’t get it. It was personal. I’m a private person,” she said, her voice going soft.

“Amy, I know you’re private. I didn’t identify you in the paper. The story is sweet and inspirational. I loved it. It’s worth being shared,” I told her.

I watched as the anger slipped away and was replaced with sadness. Her eyes filled with tears, shocking the hell out of me. I had no idea it was that big of a deal. I hated that I hurt her. I had no idea it would have that kind of an effect on her. I truly felt like a world-class asshole.

“I’m sorry, I—”

She reached for the front of my sweater, twisting it in her little fist and yanked me to her. Her mouth slammed against mine, smashing my lips against my teeth as she plunged her tongue inside my mouth. I went with it, tasting her saltiness mixed with the ale she’d been drinking. It was heavenly. I was willing to kiss her all night.

Just as fast as she had grabbed me, she pushed me away. I stared at her, wondering what had gotten into her.

“Amy, I’m really sorry. What’s going on? Why the tears?” I asked her, still confused.

She shook her head, then angrily wiped her face and shrugged.
