Chapter Five

After rearranging the table, Sam poured them each a glass of wine. Several minutes passed before Katie returned, but she finally marched around the corner, her head held high.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. I needed to freshen up a bit.” She gestured to the flowers. “Yellow, huh?” Her voice remained cold and distant, much like it had during the majority of their conversations toward the end of their marriage.

“The pink ones always remind me of you.” Although their argument had been interrupted, the room remained filled with all the words that were never said and the distance between them grew, though neither of them moved.

For lack of anything better to say, he asked, “Wine?” He extended an arm and she bridged the space between them, accepting the glass.

“Thank you.”

“Look, Katie, it’s silly to assume the problems that split us up would disappear once our divorce was final, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy dinner together.” He motioned toward the table. “How about this? We take advantage of the view as the sun sets, eat some incredibly overpriced food, and maybe try to learn how to be in the same room without fighting?”

She sipped the wine, licking her full lips after swallowing, and nodded. “It’s a deal.”

“Great.” He stepped to her side of the table and pulled out the chair. “After you.”

“Thank you.”

Adjusting her seat, he took his place across from her then removed both covers from their plates. Steam rose in a willowy cloud.

Her eyes widened and she laid her napkin across her lap. “This smells fantastic.”

“Some of your favorites, if I recall.”

A thick cut of prime rib, fluffy, twice-baked potatoes, and, by his special request, crisp sugar snap peas filled the platters. He’d passed on the green beans he preferred, but considered it a small peace offering. Lord knows, they had a long way to go.

“It’s been forever since I had a steak.” Slicing the juicy meat, she smiled when it fell apart with little effort, revealing the bright pink center. “You remembered.”

“A talented veterinarian could revive it, right?”

Wrapping her lips around the first bite, she slid the fork out of her mouth and moaned.

He tried to focus on anything but her lips. Damn, but those lips…. “I never could understand how you can eat it that raw.”

“That’s because you like yours burned.”

“Cooked.”

“Whatever.” She laughed.

They ate most of the meal in silence and enjoyed the wondrous show nature provided through the windows, the brilliant reds, oranges, and purples swathing a sky more spectacular than he’d ever seen. A flock of geese flew by in a perfect V formation, their precision awe-inspiring. Was it the view, or perhaps the company, that made him appreciate things he otherwise didn’t?

By the time their plates lay empty, the sky had darkened. He watched her across the table, filled with serenity they hadn’t shared for many years.

Leaning back in her chair, she rested a hand on her bloated tummy. “Oh, I can’t eat another bite.”

He smiled. “That’s good because there’s nothing left.”

“True, and if there was more, I’d probably force it down.
