TATUM

Knowing that I get to sleep and wake up to Beckett makes waking up worth it. He woke me up this morning by eating me out and then making me breakfast. Randy had texted me late last night asking if we could meet his boy toy soon, so I agreed. I’m not going to lie and say I was overly thrilled about him meeting someone, but he deserves to have someone that can belong to him. I just don’t think anyone will be good enough for him. Overly protective? Maybe.

I’m currently waiting for Beck to get back from his morning run when I start snooping. His place is pretty spacious for him to be only twenty-one. Although, it’s sparsely decorated. I walk to the guest room, making a mental note on what we should add. When I twist the doorknob it won’t open.

Huh, that’s odd.

Turning back around, I make my way into the kitchen. He has a beautiful view of his backyard. There’s a gorgeous willow oak tree standing tall in the backyard, so I walk outside to admire it.

Beck comes to stand beside me and admires the tree with me. He takes my hand and gently lays it on the bark. The leaves are pear shaped and about two to five inches long with tiny bristles at the tip.

Beck runs his hands over the tree and sighs. “Did you know that after fifteen years of growth this tree will drop its first acorns and will go on to become one of the most prolific producers of acorns that’ll nourish all sorts of wildlife,” he asks.

The corner of his mouth quirks up as he runs his hands over the thick, dark bark. I pick up a fallen twig that has a few leaves on it. “It’s gorgeous,” I murmur.

He beams with pride as he spouts off another fact. “It grows in a pyramidal shape while it’s young and then becomes oblong in what we would probably call it’s teenage years, only to be a rounded shape when it hits adulthood.” He’s walking us around the tree now. “I guess the reason I’m so attached to this tree is because, like my youth, it tolerates poorly drained soil. So the environment it comes from affects it but doesn’t define it. The soil wasn’t the best but yet, here it stands tall and beautiful,” he says.

I’m completely awestruck by his knowledge. “What made you want to learn about trees?” I ask as he grabs my hand and leads us back into the house. He walks to the kitchen and grabs a bottle of water and takes a sip before answering.

“That’s why I do what I do for work. Most of the time when we clear out people’s trees or stumps, they're dead. People like planting new ones for the next generation. I guess I like knowing that even in a hundred years she'll be standing strong, even when I’m gone. Plus, this tree reminds me of my mom. At least what I remember of her,” he explains.
