CHAPTER ELEVEN

The nurse’s station was a small brick building to the left of the high school. I made sure I was alone before I broke the door’s window so I could unlock it from the inside. There were all of five rooms in the building: the waiting area, the office that the nurses and doctors used, an exam room, a lavatory, and the holding room.

I knew the office was where they kept the drugs. If there were any painkillers on site, I needed them. After a quick look through of the entire building to make sure it was clear, I went to the office and studied the locked cabinet with the frosted glass. Before I smashed it, I thought to check the two desks. The first desk didn’t have the key but it did have a locked file cabinet. I pried it open with the hedge clippers to discover private medical files and a half-filled bottle of whiskey.

“Oh, Nurse Garcia, I knew you drank, only I didn’t realize you drank on the job. Of course, if I had to deal with kids at their worst, I’d drink, too.”

I put the bottle on the second desk and started going through its drawers. I knew if I had to, that whiskey could be my painkiller, but I really didn’t want it to be. Alcohol and brain meds didn’t mix well. The middle drawer of the second desk was locked. I pried it open and found a set of keys.

It took me until the third key to unlock the cabinet and, much to my surprise and pleasure, there was a bottle of Tylenol 3 with codeine front and center. That was all I needed. It was a drug I was familiar with, knew how it interacted with my body and my other drugs, and, most importantly, it worked.

With my bottle of painkillers, I moved to the exam room for bandages and other stuff I needed. I mourned the ragged hole in the sleeve of my coat and hissed in pain when I peeled it off my arm and then half shrugged out of my sweater. The sensation of my sweater sleeve dragged over the slash was enough that I stopped, popped two painkillers, and prayed for them to work quickly.

I wanted more but knew I shouldn’t have more. I checked the time to see when I could take another, and realized it had been over twenty-four hours since I discovered Sharon and Matt dead. Grief reared its ugly head again and I stomped on it as hard as I could. The tears still welled up and I had to take a couple of breaths to regain my composure. Had it really been only one day? It felt like a thousand years.

The gash in my arm hurt but wasn’t that bad. I used three butterfly bandages to pull it closed, covered it with a trauma pad, then wrapped my arm in rolled gauze. It would probably leave a scar. I prayed that the Fedoras hadn’t poisoned me.
