Eric
Bri and I had kept up our charade the beginning of the week, and before I knew it, Wednesday had arrived. A man of my word, I put on my finest yoga attireâa pair of gray joggers and a white t-shirtâand joined Bri at her motherâs yoga studio right after school.
As soon as I walked into the studio, Briâs mom greeted me. âSo nice to see you again, Eric.â She smiled warmly. âIâm sorry we didnât get to chat much at Mellyâs wedding, but I found myself quite busy.â
I nodded. âI understand, Mrs. Songs. And congrats, by the way.â
Mrs. Songs shuffled some papers around her desk and then spoke. âBriâs in the Cypress room today.â
I moved to turn, but Mrs. Songsâs voice stopped me. âEric?â
âYes, Mrs. Songs?â
She stood from the desk and leaned forward. âI want you to know how happy Bri has seemed lately, and the only change I can pinpoint is ⦠well ⦠you.â She beamed at me, and I couldnât stop the stab of guilt that suddenly pierced my stomach. She frowned. âNot that she wasnât happy before, itâs just a new side of her I havenât seen.â
âThank you. Briâs pretty amazing.â And I meant it.
She shook her head. âWell, enjoy class.â
I walked down a dimly-lit hallway and opened the door adorned with a logo of a lone cypress that looked like one Iâd seen when Mom and I visited California last summer. As soon as I walked in the studio, I noticed three things: 1) The room smelled like a blend of lavender and lime, the same fresh scent Iâd noticed on Bri. 2) Savannah and Sam were there tooâthank goodness. 3) There was no sign of Bri.
Savannah pointed to a stack of black mats in the corner of the room. âTake one. Shoes off,â she demanded.
I did as she asked and spread my mat out in front of Sam. Just then, Bri walked through the door and moved fluidly to her place in the front of the small room. She sent a shy smile my way and whispered, her soft voice carrying through the room. âIâll go slow for you today.â
I silently sighed, glad for that and equally glad that with Sam here, I wouldnât be the only yoga novice in the tiny room. Iâd only done yoga one other time in my life, and that was when my mom forced me in front of the television to do yoga with one of those old DVDs. Some woman in eighties spandex and a side ponytail had asked me to do some sort of weird pretzel move, and I was out.
Bri sat down on her mat in the front of room, shoulders back, and I couldnât help but notice the quiet confidence that came over her. Really, it wasnât just the confidence I noticed, but her quiet radiance. Sure, she looked great at her sisterâs wedding, but she simply radiated under the dim studio lights. When she moved, the light caught her dark hair, making it seem to shine underneath.
