18 A Long Way Down

Shoving against the dead weight, I heave the creature off of me. My beautiful claws are shorn down, broken off in the beast’s neck. No matter; they’ll grow back soon enough. I swallow down a wave of nausea that comes along with the pain, and have a horrifying thought.

Nahum.

Right about now his dragon talons will be glowing purple and shooting fiery pain up his fingers and into his hands. I’m hurting the dragon when I hurt myself. And I know he’ll have felt my stunt with the lightning birds. He probably lit up like a glow-stick when that happened. Aw, hell. Now I feel doubly bad. For hurting him, and for worrying him. Not to mention putting him in an awkward position if he’s around Amun or the others. And there’s nothing I can do about it.

Way to go, Never.

I stumble over a tentacle as the snallygaster lets out a last, whooshing breath, smoke billowing from its ruined beak.

I can’t whistle in this form, so I let out a low, one-note howl.

“You guys did a number on it. Excellent job. Now then, may I assume our valiant feat has scared off our enemies?”

Brutus and the drake haul the wolf shifter from the snallygaster’s talon. He’s wincing and yelping, but he’s alive.

Around our group I hear the sound of beating wings.

“No? Too soon for celebration?” I manage a wry smile. Brutus rolls his eyes at me, and Ji-hwan even lets out a chuckle.

“But do we have the orb?” the warlock snaps, shoving past the feline shifter and marching straight up to me. “If you didn’t keep it safe while you were busy showboating—”

He’s prodding me in the chest with an accusatory finger.

“Showboating? Showboating! I just killed a creature that would have barbecued you, you egotistical parlor-trick magician!”

His cheeks turn a deep red that begins to slide into purple territory. He huffs and puffs, sputtering at the insult. It may not seem like much. After all—magic? magical? But magician is near-unforgivably rude when applied to a witch or warlock. Indicates they have no real magic. Just tricks. And for someone as inflated with self-importance as this guy, whom I can easily read, it’s a difficult term to bear.

“Ever! The orb?” She steps up, holding the item out in front of her. Relief washes over me from the direction of Brutus and Kap.

Brutus steps around the warlock. Ever moves to hand him the orb, but he shakes his head.

“No. I trust you with it. Now, we just need to—”

A feathered form swoops in between us, wrapping its arms around Ever before I can react. The creature moves so quickly it’s hard to catch what it even is, but it hauls Ever into the sky.

The Wereling shrieks and kicks as the winged creature pulls her higher. Are those wings on its ankles? A wind elf?

First, Calder tries to take over the casino. Is there any chance this is Sky? Another one of Amun’s representatives gone rogue? If it is, her reasons don’t matter to me for the moment.
