Chapter 11
Switching Back to the Disney Channel
Puzo kept her gun aimed at the floor as I moved towards the door, only raising it when I stood beside it. She kept her iron sights firm, aimed at the door and never quivered - not even by an inch â and waited for my signal. My own gun rested firmly in my hand, hanging at my side just out of view. The Glock 22 was the firearm of choice for FBI agents but I'd never been a fan, I found it too light and small and it just didn't look threatening but seeing it in her hands I knew what type of damage this gun could really do.
There are literally thousands of guns to choose from if one is in the market but when I went on the search there was one weapon for me. The M9 was the army's sidearm of choice for decades. I had trained with a M9 and spent many nights in the field sleeping with one by my side. When I went into battle I had a M9 by my side and in Iraq when my rifle jammed and the Elite guard came over the wall I reached for my M9 to save my life. The closest thing I'd ever had to a long-term monogamous relationship was with a M9. A M9 had never failed me overseas and it certainly wasn't going to fail me at my own front door.
I carefully pulled the door open and peered outside. Elaine stood outside with a good looking man behind her. She looked okay but sadly, without her infectious smile, her body looked weak and her curly hair was lackluster. "Elaine? What are you doing here?"
"Hey, Ben. I needed to talk to you."
"Yeah, sure. Who is this guy?"
"Oh, right, this is Steve, my boyfriend." I tell her to give me a second and close the door. I gave Puzo the all clear, thumbed on the M9's safety, and returned it to my holster. Puzo lowered her weapon and returned to the kitchen to retrieve her stuff.
"Sorry about that." I opened the door and let them both in. Here I was letting the enemy into my apartment. Steve was a tall man with spiky black hair, strong arms and had a quarterback's stare. Elaine had talked about him quite a bit, commenting on her boyfriend like she felt guilty by the way she acted with me, so I knew a fair deal about him. He was in his mid twenties, was a male nurse, and played in three different sports leagues. This man was the enemy and I just let him in my house. I was pretty sure that your crush's boyfriends were like vampires; once you invited them in they could come and go as they pleased.
"Hi, I'm Ben Thompson." I offered the nurse my hand. Steve gave it a shake, a nice sturdy one. Damn, he even had a good hand shake. I was hoping for a limp wrist or a weak grasp.
