Chapter Twelve
Angie flipped her wall calendar to the month of August and penciled in ‘Adamcik shower’ on the last Sunday. “It’s later than we originally planned but it’s the only weekend Caroline, Misty, and I are all free,” Cathy Flores explained. “And we wanted to be sure you saved Holly the date.”
“Thanks for the heads up” Angie said as she smoothed down the July page and put her pencil on the desk. “Do you want me to bring anything?”
“We were hoping we could have a couple of your sample soaps to give as door prizes. The guests would really like that.” Cathy followed Angie back out into the store and hopped up on the makeup stool. Angie had tweaked her scar-concealing makeup and wanted to try it out on Cathy before she put it on the market.
“Sure,” Angie said as she wet a cotton square with makeup remover and gently began to wipe away the foundation that covered the pink puckered scars down one side of Cathy’s face. “Pink soap or blue? Or do we know?”
“Pink,” Cathy said, smiling as Angie removed the last of the makeup. “The docs at the VA were nice enough to go ahead and do an ultrasound even though it was a little early.” Cathy smiled. “I can hardly wait to go for it myself. We’re going to start trying as soon as we’re out of that tiny apartment.”
“And moving back into your house here in Verde is still off the table?” Angie asked.
“I’m afraid so, yes,” Cathy admitted. “I can’t walk back in there without reliving the rape and Beto remembers having to shoot the bastard and he doesn’t like it there either. With help, we’ve worked towards normal. So now, the rape doesn’t seem to have damaged our love life. Beto and I are like any other horny newlyweds. But, I still can’t walk into that house without breaking out in a cold sweat. Neither of us can stand being there.”
“So don’t be there,” Angie said. “I think you’re both doing great, considering what you went through.” Angie put down the foundation brush and handed Cathy a mirror. “So what do you think?”
Cathy peered in the mirror and then ran her fingers gently down the side of her face. “I think it’s quite a bit better,” she answered as she looked this way and that. “This feels much lighter. Thanks for all you’ve done for me and the other women you sell this to. You can’t imagine what a difference something like this makes. Are you still selling a lot of it?”
“Thank God, yes,” Angie breathed. “That’s the only product that hasn’t seen a drop in sales with the vandalism. Everything else is down in the toilet.”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Cathy said. “You so don’t deserve this.”
The bell on the door tinkled and Ida Puckett stepped inside. Angie smiled warmly and breathed a sigh of relief to see Ida’s return to the shop. “Mrs. Puckett. It’s so good to see you.”
“Likewise,” Ida said. Her
