Berne took a calming breath, then pasted on what he felt was his most charming smile. He knocked on Veronique's door and waited to greet her.

The door opened...then slammed in his face.

The shock of it left him silent for a moment. Anger rose up like flood waters in his gut, and he knocked again.

I shouldn't be demanding. Still, he knew he was.

The door didn't budge, and she didn't respond to him verbally.

"Come on, Veronique. The least you can do is talk to me. You're my mate."

The door opened, but Veronique didn't move to let him pass. She blocked his way, glaring at him.

"Veron—"

"I'm your mate? And like all males, that means you think you have some right to me?"

The accusation stung. "No. I never said—"

"Didn't you? Didn't you just assume we would be finishing what we started? Didn't you ignore my distress and decide that was all I was good for?"

"Yes. I mean, no. Some of it, but no." I can't even form a logical answer. What is wrong with me?

He opened his mouth to try again.

Veronique poked a finger against his chest. "Aside from biological drives, I don't know what I ever saw in you, Berne." Tears misted her eyes.

Berne reached for her, the need to comfort her like a fire in his blood.

She slapped him. Hard.

He shook his head, trying to erase the sparkles of light dancing in his field of vision.

"I will never be your mate."

The door slammed between them, punctuating the sick twist of his stomach her words set off. Berne stood there, at a loss for words, hurting as he hadn't known a man could hurt.

The sound of someone clearing his throat had him whirling toward it.

The residence head stood there, a stately old matriarch wolf, one hand folded over the other, her back straight, and one brow raised in challenge.

His face burned at the censure in that look.

"I believe the lady has spoken, sir. You should not return to this residence house."

She didn't need to say more. If he returned, she would tear into him with claws and teeth. Then she would turn him over to the guards, and not even his family or the Alphas would support him.

"Yes, Mother Wolf. As you say." He ducked his head respectfully, then made his way into the cold night.

Berne looked up at the sky, frustrated beyond words. She will never be my mate.

Of course, he didn't know that for certain. Veronique may have been speaking out of anger and hurt. She could change her mind.

But not if I push her. Not if I pursue.

What did that leave him?

Waiting, just as I've always waited for her.

What if waiting costs me her? What if she thinks I'm not interested?

There was no way to answer that.
