The next thirty minutes dragged by in another tangle of phone calls and budgets and descriptions of gourmet dishes that either sounded way too fancy or way too expensive for what she needed. One of the keys to a successful event was giving people the same, but different. Whacky designer dishes might seem like a great idea on paper, but if no one knew what they were eating, it wouldn’t go down well—literally or figuratively. Finally, she’d narrowed the choices down to a few items and made notes to request them from the kitchens at the Polar Club to sample before placing her final order. Maybe Max could help her with those as well.

And speaking of Max, he tapped on her door at that moment to let her know he was ready.

Perfect.

She gathered her bag and phone then shut down her computer and said goodbye to her staff before heading out of her office to meet Max in the hall by the elevators.

He’d changed out of scrubs into khakis and a soft-looking black turtleneck. Her fingertips itched with a weird urge to stroke his chest and see if he felt as solid and warm as she remembered from the day before. Ayanna stopped herself clenching the handles of her brown leather satchel and stared straight ahead at the elevator doors.

Get a grip, girl.

The elevator dinged and he held the door for her to board first. As she passed him, Ayanna caught a hint of sandalwood and cedar soap on his skin. And just like that all her good intentions fell by the wayside. Goosebumps of awareness rose on her arms and the backs of her knees buzzed with adrenaline. Memories of his mouth on hers, the sweep of his tongue, the flavor of salt and sweetness in his kisses swamped her.

Oh, boy. This was bad. So, so bad. What if she’d read it all wrong? What if Max wasn’t the good guy she thought he was? What if he couldn’t be trusted, just like Will? What if...?

“Where are we going?” Max asked, his words jarring her out of her downward spiral. “On that ball-related errand you mentioned.”

“Oh.” She gathered her red trench coat closer around her like a shield. “A local bakery. I thought you could help me choose the dessert for the evening.” At his surprised look, she smiled. “What? You said you wanted to help, and I could use a second set of taste buds to make sure I’m picking out the right one.”

“Okay.”

“And don’t worry about cooking dinner tonight. I’ll order in samples of the dinner menu selections for us to try.”

“Sounds good.” Max gave a curt nod. “It’s been quite a day and cake makes everything better.”

“Amen to that,” she said, then stopped herself. “Sorry. Nothing new with the King, I hope?”

“No. His condition is still the same.” He didn’t elaborate and that was good. HIPAA laws were there for a reason, namely to protect patient privacy. “Just hectic.”

The elevator dinged and the doors slid open on the first floor.
