Chapter Nineteen

The signs announced the road construction I’d barreled into, warning me to brake, slow down, and watch for workers. A handful of warnings threatened extensive fines and jail time if I ran over anybody. But this Friday afternoon, for whatever reason, the work zone was completely devoid of workers.

The traffic crept through like ants.

I walked the Indian behind a couple barricades and stayed as far right as I could on the narrow strip of grass that served as a shoulder. At least here, behind the warning lights, there was a guard rail next to the steep drop off, and I felt safe enough to call emergency services for the red pickup.

Nobody else stopped.

Unable to see the wreck from where I stood, I stayed put for the first responders. No sense escaping death only to check out in an attempt to locate my killer. Because I was sure the guy had intended to kill me.

There had been nothing careless or accidental about the red pickup’s deliberate actions. I was pretty sure the dump truck and Dodge boatman were complicit in the scheme as well.

No way to prove it, of course. Except for the red pickup, the others were long gone.

While I waited, I tried to remember their license plate numbers. I had bits and pieces of numbers and letters, but nothing definite.

I counted it as a win just to be alive.
