Chapter 2

Snow White heard voices of the two dwarves on guard outside the tent as they challenged the prince. She smiled as she heard the prince’s voice rise in agitation. They were teasing him, something that never failed to make her laugh.

A bespectacled dwarf stuck his head into the tent, grinning.

“The prince is here to see you, your majesty.”

“What?” She said. “Oh how lovely! Send him in.”

The prince strode into the chamber, his fine jacket and breeches still soiled from the road.

“My prince!” The young princess said, her mouth curling up into a smile. “What a pleasant surprise! Welcome back to my humble camp.”

Her chambers were a sharp contrast from her stepmother’s lavish throne room. It was more of a frontier outpost than royal chambers although someone had added homey touches to make it more cozy. Red silk hung from the rough, brown canvas walls. Candles cast a warm, welcoming light. To one side was a bed piled high with fluffy, goose down pillows half hidden behind a gauzy, white curtain.

“I am sorry, your majesty.” The prince said. “I would have sent word but I have urgent news.”

“So urgent that you forget to kneel?” Snow White said, a mocking smile on her face.

“I... I’m sorry, my princess. In your presence, I quite forget myself.” The prince said.

He knelt upon a fine woven rug which covered the ground, a pale circle with three blood-red roses, the thorny stems intertwined. It was the young princess’s seal, a nod to the legend of Snow White’s birth. The old queen, so the story went, had been sewing when she had pricked her finger and three drops of blood had fallen upon the pale, cream circle of fabric. It was then the old queen had prayed for a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and black as the wood of the embroidery frame.

Snow White sat upon a stout wooden chair looking down at the prince, her mother’s prophecy come to life. She had coal black hair, pale skin, and lips the color of ripe strawberries. Or blood, if that was your fancy, but she preferred to think of them as fruit.

The princess waved a hand to the two dwarves who had followed the prince into the tent. One of them scowled and was about to say something when an older, bespectacled dwarf held up a hand. The angry dwarf said nothing, but gave the prince a withering glare as they left. As they were about to close the tent flap, the princess called out.

“Please see we are not disturbed. After all, we do not want the prince interrupted as he gives me... his urgent news.”

Before the flap had even closed, Snow White was on her feet and running to the prince, her bare feet sprinting across the rug. At the last moment, she leapt with a happy cry and landed in the prince’s waiting arms.

She mistimed the leap, however, and came down hard. The two of them fell into a tangle of arms and legs.
