If the castle was imposing during the day, it was mildly terrifying at night. There were lamps lit, and the reassuring feeling that someone, somewhere was up, and yet, the ghost of its long history felt present that night, as I stole toward the kitchens. It was after midnight, and the huge room was empty. I went straight to the massive fridge and looked for milk. My feet were freezing against the tiles, and the air from the fridge made my nipples hard, and my whole body tremble.

Just as I reached in for it, ridiculously deep in the huge, hulking appliance, I felt a presence move just beside me. My earlier thoughts about historic ghosts flooded back, and I let out a short cry, as I let the door slam shut, and lifted the heavy milk bottle as a warning.

Prince Nathaniel stood in the space where my imaginary ghost had been. He was wearing sleeping pants and a soft black t-shirt. His hair wasn’t parted and tamed, as it usually was, and the long fringe fell across one eye. He looked better than he ever had, and this man always looked good enough to eat. What usually saved me from feeling too swoony toward him was his characteristically unpleasant, aloof expression. Tonight, that was nowhere to be seen. His face was soft, open, and he was looking at me with curiosity and something else. Regret.

“I – I thought you were a ghost,” I stammered, as he looked in askance at my make-shift weapon. His mouth quirked in an almost smile.

“And you hoped that a hard object would be a threat to an apparition? Or perhaps you were hoping it was a lactose intolerant spirit?” he mused. His words burst the nerves in my chest seeing him suddenly before me had planted and I couldn’t help laughing.

“You’ve got me. I suppose that wasn’t too well thought out, was it? At least you can sleep well knowing that if any assassins were to enter the palace, that I’m prepared to defend you with a milk bottle,” I told him, as seriously as I could. The small smirk on his face pulled the rest of his lips into a heart-stopping grin for a moment. He looked so much younger, and just for a flash, I could see how different he would be if he had been second born. The spare, instead of the heir.

“For tonight, at least, I am reassured.” His voice was heavy, and my heart squeezed.

“You should really just call me Leonora or Nora, like Henry and Isabella do,” I told him, watching as he took the cold milk bottle from my hand, and brought it to the counter.

“I thought it would be easier to keep it professional between us. Maybe if I called you Miss Spence, I would remember that you work for me. Worked for me,” he corrected quietly, and cast a look back over his shoulder. That look set me on fire in ways I hardly understood.

“Do you need help remembering that?”

“Every day,” he said, and went to a cupboard for a mug.
