Chapter 8

It was a chilly dark dank morning when Edward and Elizabeth arrived at his mother’s castle. The black carriage slowed at the front entrance and servants rushed out to meet them. “Sir Edward your mother is waiting for you and the Countess’s arrival. Your ladyship is ill;” he lowered his head. “She is in need of a doctor, but she will have none of it,” the old man said as he moved slowly through the doors. His bent shoulders indicated that he was comfortable bowing, and perhaps had been a servant since he was a child.

The old servant took liberties that most would not. When the maids and kitchen servants had gone about their business, he called Edward by his name. He glanced at Elizabeth and said, “Edward, I think Miss Elizabeth will need to rest. It appears that traveling by sea does not agree with her.”

“Yes Roderick, how very perceptive. Have one of the maids take her to the East wing.” The old man servant reached for her cloth bag and Elizabeth would not release it.

“I am taking it with me, Edward, and I do not wish to have any servants assist me. I can look after myself.”

“My dear, just let Roderick help you up the stairs.”

Elizabeth gazed at Roderick for a few seconds, “No I can make it on my own. I know the room.” She placed both hands on her long silk skirt pulling it on both sides and lumbering up the mahogany serpentine stairs. Half way she tottered side to side then gaining her composure, she made it to the top. She turned right and disappeared.

Edward and Roderick followed her steps. “Your mother is waiting for you in the solarium,” Roderick murmured pointing to the east wing of the castle on the main floor. Edward hurried to greet his mother. The solarium was near the garden. When he walked into comforting heat, he spied his mother, alone, sitting in a chair facing her rose garden. He scurried behind her and placed a kiss on her cheek.

Looking up with hands outstretched she said, “My son, it has been a long time. I have been feeling poorly.” Edward kneeled at her side and took her hands.

“Why mother, you have never looked lovelier.” He gathered a blanket in his hands and placed it on her lap pulling it across her knees, where it fell to her ankles.

She had always been a beautiful woman. A natural blond and now the blond hair had been taken over by white hair like weeds in a rose garden after the blooms had fallen away. Born a princess and married beneath her to Edward’s father who was only an Earl. Yet their marriage was a good one and she loved her only son and wanted the best for him.

“Did you bring your wife and child, Edward?”

“Mother, the weather was too treacherous to risk traveling on the sea with my son.” Both mother and son knew the truth of Elizabeth’s son, yet they hid
