Burning of Khandavaprastha

The Pandavas had inherited the wilderness of Khandavaprastha, where they planned to build a city. The fire-god,Agni, promised to help them if they allowed him to feed on the flora and fauna of the forest. The Pandavas agreed, and Agni’s flames soon engulfed the forest. All the residents—birds, beasts, demons and serpents—were burned in the conflagration. The Pandavas shot all those who tried to escape. They even created a canopy of arrows over the forest so that the rain-god, Indra, who had been summoned by the beasts, could not put out Agni’s flames. In the land that was cleared the Pandavas built the fabulous city of Indraprastha. (Mahabharata)
