CHAPTER FIVE

Amber agreed after much pouting to go wait in the car. I suggested that she call Alice and catch her up on everything that happened with the case. Meanwhile Sam and I were face to face with a potential murderer. We all sat down at Kate's dining room table.

"Start from the beginning," said Sam. "How did you and Hugo meet?

Kate sighed. "My marriage was struggling as I'm sure you both already know."

I exhaled a deep breath. "Yes we know all about Chris and Amber." I was embarrassed and disappointed that my sister helped wreck another marriage. Would she ever learn her lesson?

"So I thought I would try a love potion to help spice things up between me and Chris." Kate wept and buried her face in her hands.

"You bought the potion from Hugo?" said Sam.

Kate shrugged. "Yes, well at least that was my plan. Hugo ended up giving me the wrong potion. Going to his shop was the worst mistake of my life."

I interrupted. "Why do you say that? What potion did he sell you?" I tried to imagine what Hugo's motives were in selling Kate the wrong potion. Was it a mistake or something worse?

Kate bit her lip. "He sold me a lust potion. And he insisted that I try some."

Sam and I both raised an eyebrow.

"So you drank some of the potion?" said Sam.

"Yes, and then I felt so strange. I couldn't control myself and ended up taking all of my clothes off right in front of Hugo."

I cringed. That dirty half-gnome. He'd purposely given Kate a lust potion so she would sleep with him.

“Did Hugo take advantage of your condition?” Sam’s face burned with anger.

“I can’t remember anything.” Kate wept uncontrollably.

I turned to Sam. “She could possibly plead insanity. Or claim she was drugged?” I was assuming that Kate shot Hugo in an act of revenge for what he’d done.

Sam held up his palm at me. “Hold on. We don’t have all the facts yet.”

Sam returned his attention to Kate. “Did you shoot Hugo?”

Kate frowned. “All I remember is waking up and he was dead on the floor. There was a huge gun next to me.”

“So it wasn’t your gun?” I asked.

Kate shook her head. “I’d never seen that gun before in my life.”

“Where is the weapon now?” Sam asked her.

“I ran away and left it in the shop.”

“Kate, please wait here. I need to consult with my associate for one moment,” said Sam. I followed him from the dining room to the kitchen and we spoke with our voices low.

“Is it alright if I use the bathroom,” said Kate. “I just need a minute.”

“Yes ma’am, go right ahead. Take your time.” Sam smiled at her as she walked to the bathroom located in the hallway.

“So where is the gun now? And where did it come from if it wasn’t hers?” I couldn’t picture Kate carrying the size of gun used in the shooting. She must have found it at Hugo’s magic shop.

Sam nodded. “Good questions. Maybe it was a gun Hugo was keeping at his shop for security.
