ELEVEN

My closet is betraying me. The PTA meeting starts in an hour and I have nothing to wear. I’ve been standing here in the massive closet for longer than I care to admit, looking at all of my clothes and wondering why they all suck. What are you supposed to wear to a PTA meeting? Surely it’s classier than what you’d wear for a regular day of shopping at Target or something.

Elle had texted me earlier letting me know how the PTA meetings go when someone is applying for membership. I have to fill out a form, introduce myself, and then attend a regular meeting. Then, after the meeting, they’ll decide if they want to offer me full membership. Luckily that part happens after I’ve gone, so I won’t be getting judged right to my face. But I’ll still be getting judged, which isn’t exactly a fun idea. Still, being a part of the PTA will be a huge step in the right direction in my goal of becoming an amazing mom.

I need to win these parents over. I need a good outfit. I look up Elle’s social media and scroll through her posts, trying to remember if she’s posted anything about the PTA before. If she’s posted a meeting, that would be even better, then I could see what everyone wears. Unfortunately, there is nothing of the sort on her page. Guess I have to wing it.

Since it’s fall, the whole “pumpkin spice” aesthetic is super popular on Elle’s social media right now. So I go with that theme and choose a pair of black skinny jeans, knee-high leather boots, a dark green sweater, and a long trendy topaz necklace. It’s not yet cold outside, but I fit the fall theme really well. I brush my hair into a low ponytail and put on some makeup. I look way more dressed up than usual, but is it enough for a PTA meeting?

I am all nerves as I drive up to the school’s side entrance. Elle told me the meetings are held in the cafeteria and they leave a side door unlocked for us. There are about ten other cars clumped together in this part of the parking lot, so I’ve found the right place. I take a deep breath and step out of my car. I hope these people like me. I hope I like them. I want to be a part of this.

The school cafeteria is empty except for two tables in the middle of the room. A third table next to it is filled with cookies, coffee carafes, and other snack foods. About a dozen woman are here, some sitting and chatting, and others standing. I know I told Jace that the PTA means any parent, but I guess only moms care about this sort of thing. I do a quick inventory of their outfits as I walk across the cafeteria. Almost everyone is dressed the same way I am. Score one for Bayleigh!

Elle is easy to spot in the crowd because of her big hair and contagious, cheerful laugh.
