Tess pressed her fingers into her eye sockets and groaned. Thank god Graham had already slinked off to work.
Sheâd listened for the front door to close before she slipped out of bed. Happy to avoid him.
Her head spun as she reached for a pod to put in her Nespresso machine. Sheâd have a double shot of caffeine. If she could shoot it straight into her veins, she would.
Sheâd had far too much to drink last night. She didnât even know what time her husband had come home. She really needed to cut back. Sheâd not heard a sound and he wasnât normally light on his feet.
She wasnât an alcoholic, but she did drink too much from time to time.
Alcoholics drank all day long, didnât they? Hid their bottles of vodka and gin in cupboards throughout the house just so they could access it any time they wanted it.
Grahamâs old secretary had apparently kept a bottle of gin in her bottom drawer. Had she found the job so stressful, or was it Graham himself who had driven her to drink? Perhaps heâd pursued her, too, but sheâd not been interested.
Tess snorted. That was rubbish. Sheâd been ancient. Perhaps the alcohol had pickled her, but she definitely hadnât been Grahamâs type.
Tess was strict on her drinking habit. Never a glass before 6 p.m. Unless it was the weekend, of course. She might have one with her lunch then. Maybe 1 p.m. With the nice weather, it was so easy to have an icy cold glass of Pinot Grigio while she read a good book in the garden.
She didnât need to make excuses. The others didnât need to judge. After all, what else was she to do with herself these days?
Besides, her fiftieth birthday was fast approaching, and while everyone else wanted to celebrate that landmark, she really didnât want to acknowledge it. She didnât want to get any older.
She volunteered at the local school two mornings a week. Helped with some of the children who had special needs and required extra reading practice. It wasnât so very hard. Frustrating. Unrewarding. But not hard.
Most of the children were scared to death of her. She had no idea why.
She wasnât cut out like Bobbi, she knew that. No Earth mother was she. If she had been, she would have had as many children as Bobbi had. One had been enough for her. God knows how sheâd survived that. Ashton had been a nightmare when he was a baby. Cried all damned night, and all damned day too.
No one in their right minds should have a baby. Never mind more than one.
She glanced at the clock. Almost midday. She must have fallen back to sleep once Graham had gone. Sheâd not even realised sheâd slept the morning away.
The faint shake of her fingers stopped her as she raised them to her forehead. She had an hour to get ready and make it to the school in time for reading at 1.30 p.m.
She dabbed her fingers over dry lips.
