“We’re two steps closer, Dad,” Beth said with a tired smile. “Two little steps closer.” She was in her car on her way back to Providence, her window down, her hair flapping in the breeze. With Labor Day now behind and autumn around the corner, she’d recently decided that now would be a good time to start checking out the nearby food wholesalers and linen services. She’d made some calls, visited several, and now had one of each contracted to begin service sometime after Christmas. “You should have seen your little girl work them over. I’ll bet there aren’t too many small B&Bs getting discounts like we’re going to get.”

She took a sip of coffee she’d picked up a few minutes earlier, wishing it were a cup of Sean’s coffee; nothing else did the trick anymore. Then she sighed contentedly. “So, all in all, things are moving along. I’m almost finished with the furniture buying.” She laughed. “And almost broke, too. Anyway, Sean’s done with my bedroom, bathroom, and he’s just about finished with the kitchen. Oh, Dad, you should see them! First class all the way, just like you would have done.”

Then her expression clouded. “He’s been pretty upset lately, though. No big deal, really. Just a few little things he’s had to fix. But to look at him you’d think the place had blown up. He’s so proud. I don’t think he can accept the fact that he made a few mistakes. But, hey, you can relate to that perfectionist thing, huh?”

Beth drove a bit further before continuing. “He’s a good man. He doesn’t need this rotten luck he’s been having.” She sipped her coffee. “Then again, neither do I. We’ve got less than four more months until D-day. The last thing I need is for him to be running into problems that are going to cost a lot of time.”

Another mile moved by. “I just wish I knew where we stand on a personal level. The more I’m around him, the more I like being around him. But it does have the potential to make things difficult in our business relationship. Besides, it’s not like we could ever be together-together, you know? We can get along fine on a date. But if it were anything more, I’ll bet we’d be at each other’s throats on a daily basis.”

Beth laughed softly as she turned onto Blackstone Boulevard and approached the entrance to The Yesteryear. “No, I’d say this is strictly a temporary situation. Sorry about that.”
