âWeâre two steps closer, Dad,â Beth said with a tired smile. âTwo little steps closer.â She was in her car on her way back to Providence, her window down, her hair flapping in the breeze. With Labor Day now behind and autumn around the corner, sheâd recently decided that now would be a good time to start checking out the nearby food wholesalers and linen services. Sheâd made some calls, visited several, and now had one of each contracted to begin service sometime after Christmas. âYou should have seen your little girl work them over. Iâll bet there arenât too many small B&Bs getting discounts like weâre going to get.â
She took a sip of coffee sheâd picked up a few minutes earlier, wishing it were a cup of Seanâs coffee; nothing else did the trick anymore. Then she sighed contentedly. âSo, all in all, things are moving along. Iâm almost finished with the furniture buying.â She laughed. âAnd almost broke, too. Anyway, Seanâs done with my bedroom, bathroom, and heâs just about finished with the kitchen. Oh, Dad, you should see them! First class all the way, just like you would have done.â
Then her expression clouded. âHeâs been pretty upset lately, though. No big deal, really. Just a few little things heâs had to fix. But to look at him youâd think the place had blown up. Heâs so proud. I donât think he can accept the fact that he made a few mistakes. But, hey, you can relate to that perfectionist thing, huh?â
Beth drove a bit further before continuing. âHeâs a good man. He doesnât need this rotten luck heâs been having.â She sipped her coffee. âThen again, neither do I. Weâve got less than four more months until D-day. The last thing I need is for him to be running into problems that are going to cost a lot of time.â
Another mile moved by. âI just wish I knew where we stand on a personal level. The more Iâm around him, the more I like being around him. But it does have the potential to make things difficult in our business relationship. Besides, itâs not like we could ever be together-together, you know? We can get along fine on a date. But if it were anything more, Iâll bet weâd be at each otherâs throats on a daily basis.â
Beth laughed softly as she turned onto Blackstone Boulevard and approached the entrance to The Yesteryear. âNo, Iâd say this is strictly a temporary situation. Sorry about that.â
