‘Cinnamon, tell me, what do you want for your fourteenth birthday?’ Baba asked Cinnamon at the breakfast table the next morning.

‘Everything.

‘No, seriously. Tell me what you want.’

‘Maybe a bigger bicycle, which I didn’t get. And also another book by Ruskin Bond or Diary of a Wimpy Kid. That’s it. No, wait. Also a new pair of Nike sneakers and a cool denim jacket. That’s it. Oh, and also the latest video games. That’s it. And yeah, how about letting me grow my hair long? Also . . .’

His dad put up his hand, indicating Cinnamon to stop. ‘You know everything is not possible.’

Cinnamon raised his eyebrows and said sheepishly, ‘There is one more thing.’

‘Tell me,’ said Baba. But Cinnamon felt hesitant to say it.

‘I won’t get angry. Promise,’ reassured Baba.

Cinnamon looked down at the marble floor of the living room. Trying to keep his voice steady, he said as normally as he could: ‘I wanted to meet my biological parents, who gave me birth. That’s it.’

His dad pursed his lips. Maa covered her mouth in shock. Cinnamon’s heart leapt when he heard Baba’s next words. ‘Let’s see what we can do.’
