Back at the market, we weave between the stalls selling printed T-shirts, leather bags, and Japanese novelties and find the café where the others are sitting by the entrance, like they’re cool enough to attract further customers.

‘Gabe, have a toke, mate?’ Aaron’s smoking shisha.

‘You’re all right. I’ll pass.’

‘Come on, don’t be a pussy. Everyone’s had some.’

Gabriel looks at me and I shake my head. ‘I haven’t had any.’

‘You into it though?’

‘No.’

‘Just have a go,’ Aaron says.

‘He doesn’t have to.’ Maddy gives Aaron one of her hard looks.

I don’t even want to sit down. ‘We’re not staying here all day, are we?’

‘We’ve looked around already,’ Fenton shrugs, ‘seen everythin’.’

‘Yeah, we’re chillin’,’ Aaron says.

‘Can’t we go for a drink?’ I say, aware that drink is something we all like. ‘Anyone got ID?’ It’s always an issue, as only a couple of us are eighteen.

‘I have,’ James says.

‘Cool.’ I smile to myself, because there’s no way James would get served without ID. He’s tall, but skinny with spots.

‘Where shall we go?’ Maddy says, looking from me to Gabe.

‘It has to be one of Amy’s pubs.’

Maddy curls her lip. ‘You what?’

‘Amy Winehouse used to drink in The Hawley and The Castle. The Hawley’s just back that way.’ I point to the right.

‘Sounds like a plan.’ Maddy gets up, knowing everyone will follow.
