Chapter Eighteen

Ed’s and Don’s voices woke me up from the deepest sleep I’d had in days. I’d had no dreams, bad or good, which made for a nice change of pace.

I rolled over to look at the clock and discovered it was only eleven, so I pulled a T-shirt on over my boxers and made my way out to the front room.

Like the cabin, the guesthouse was full of Western touches—rustic wood and leather furniture, Native American pottery and blankets and more of those wonderful little sculptures. I’d spent the better part of the afternoon after our ride looking at those little bronzes from all different angles. My favorite was called, “Bronco Buster,” ’cause it reminded me of those equine tornadoes I’d mostly fallen off back in the day.

Ed sat on the couch with Don next to him. They looked so relaxed and casual I wasn’t even sure I should disturb them. They looked accustomed to sitting there like that. Their shared intimacy made me hesitate in the doorway longer than I meant to, until Don noticed me and motioned me in.

“Ed was just telling me you went for a ride?”

“Yeah,” I made my way toward the recliner opposite them. I flashed on memories of facing my mother and father after some minor childhood rule-breaking and had to remind myself I was old as dirt and nobody was going to scold me anymore. “I rode Tatters.”

“He’s got heart, hasn’t he? He was in pretty rough shape when Millie brought him here. A lot of hard work has gone into getting him to trust humans again. Sassy helps. She’s unflappable.”

“Thanks for letting us take them out.” Don’s generosity kept surprising me. He’d lent us the cabin, taken me to a meeting, and put us up in his guesthouse. He’d given us the use of his horses. Who goes to all that trouble for some friend of a friend? Some stranger? I cleared my throat to thank him, but what came out was, “Did you have a good day?”

Don smiled. “I did, thank you. You know what? The day flew by because I had this”—he motioned between the three of us—“to look forward to.”

“Yeah?” I asked, glancing between him and Ed. Don looked happy. Ed looked . . . reserved. If Ed was worried about taking advantage, he was barking up the wrong tree. I relaxed back in my chair and let my legs fall open in invitation.

“You look good like that, Jimmy.” Ed murmured. “All sleep-rumpled.”

Don motioned me closer. “You’re way too far away, though.”

I got up and moved toward them. Don took my hands and pulled me onto his lap. He turned toward Ed. “Maybe we should talk about ground rules, huh?”

Ed nodded. “Anything that’s off limits for you, Jimmy?”

I didn’t understand. “You mean things I won’t do?”

“Yeah. Or things you don’t like?” Don asked. “I like most sex play but you can’t mark me. No biting, no on-purpose bruising, no hickeys.”

“I like things rough, but I’m not into pain,” said Ed.
