Constantine isn’t making sense.

My head’s so wrecked with all the matchmaking, I’m certain I haven’t heard him right. “You’re talking rubbish, Constantine.” I blink and peer at his beautiful face. He’s been getting me through, concern in his words and strength in his arms. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t want to pair him—I don’t want to see that connection, that love, he’ll have for his soul mate when the magic is made. My greedy heart wants to keep him for myself. But I can’t deny the man his destiny. “What dragon doesn’t want to find his mate?”

“One who got her killed the first time.”

I squint at him. Another wave of fatigue washes through me. “Jaysus, I need to lie down for this story.”

His smile is gentle as I brace myself down into the grass, rolling onto my back where my cape and hood make a decent blanket. I gaze up at the stunning blue sky, where the clouds are as puffy and white as spring lambs cavorting across the heavens. Constantine lies down next to me, snuggling up in a way that would have me all heated if I weren’t as tired as the dead.

He props his head up to peer down at me. “You don’t want to hear this story.”

More like he doesn’t want to tell it. “You think I don’t know my own mind?”

He smiles. “Not at all.”

“Then, don’t make me ask again.” Lying down feels good—next to Constantine, even better. The field and the sky are working a spell to heal the drain of all the pairing. But those pairings brought a certain joy as well—finally, I’ve done a good thing. If only the women can be liberated, all these dragons today will build new families. There’s no tearing that away. No burning it down. I will have always done this thing, no matter what comes next… and it is good.

Now to set Constantine on his way, and I’ll be done. The Vardigah can have me, for as long as that lasts. They can’t force me to undo what I’ve done here today. I’ll drink nightshade before I let that happen.

Constantine’s smile has faded. “You know our ancestral lair was burned to the ground by the Vardigah. They tried to wipe us out.”

“In fact, I didn’t know.” I sigh and glance at the beauty of the grass. So much like home. The fatigue somehow makes it easier to confess my shame. “I grew up in a village in a field like this one.” I look back to Constantine and his suddenly-sharp eyes. “It’s like a dream to me now. All the fights and all the love. It seemed there were endless cousins and aunts and neighbors, but I think the village was less than fifty, all told. It was my home. And the Vardigah burned it to the ground. I suppose we have that in common.”

His expression softens. “How old were you?”

“Seven.” Even now, it seems impossible—that I’ve been with the Vardigah these thirteen years.
