Despite our different preferences with exercise, I thought Buddy was a brilliant listener.
Ellieâs eyes would glaze over sometimes, but Buddy would never tire of listening.
No matter what I talked about, he was always responsive. My newest interest was financial blogs. Investments or money wasnât something that my parents talked about, nor was it taught in high school. I had always been, as they say, financially prudent, whereas Ellie was more carefree about her expenses.
Now that I had to work within a budget, I discovered the FIRE community online, and it was all I can talk about.
âEllie, did you know that FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early?â
âThat is interesting...â
âYes, we should go over our budget together, and see where we can save more for retirement!â
âIt is too early to think about retirement, and besides, my budget is making more money, and then spending it.â
âHmmm... did you know what the book âThe Richest Man in Babylonâ would say about that: A manâs wealth is not in the purse he carries. A fat purse quickly empties if there be no golden stream to refill it.â
âFat purse empty... got it... I will try to remember that... â
âDid you know that lottery winners lose most of their money within a few years, because they donât know how to manage it properly?â
âIf I win the lottery, I will get myself a financial manager.â
âBut Ellie, you should learn about managing money yourself. It is an important life skill!â
âCassie, I just remembered about something urgent. I will see you later. Bye!â
I pouted when I saw Ellie disappear. She often remembered about something âurgentâ, when I talked about budgets. Sigh.
When I had the same conversation with Buddy, he never tired of it. He gave the perfect responses.
âBuddy, can you believe the MER ratio on some of these mutual funds!â
Buddy growled angrily.
âI know right! ETFs are so much more reasonable for MERs.â
Buddy wagged his tail in approval.
âBuddy, Roth IRA or Roth 401k, what do you think?â
Buddy tilted his head thoughtfully.
âBuddy, donât you love automatic savings, and investing? It makes saving money so much easier, and convenient!â
Buddy barked in excitement.
I was so glad he listened well. I felt myself swell with pride, at having such a smart dog as my financial collaborator. I was so happy with his responses, that I gave him a much deserved hug, and said, âI love you, my smart, little fur ball. You are my Financial Puppy Guru, Buddy!â.
Buddy licked my face happily.
Buddy and I may have our differences, but at least we are on the same wavelength, with financial matters, and saving for our future.
One day, I will convince Ellie, but until that day, I will keep the financial conversations between myself and Buddy.
