Chapter Ten

When Gib came into the bookstore on Monday with his findings, it seemed there was no end to what needed to be repaired.

I knew it was bad, but it was even worse than I thought. Many problems couldn’t be seen by a homeowner, Gib told me. But when he suspected a problem, Gib said he dug deeper and often found hidden issues—like the dry rot around our front door.

“How did that happen?” I asked, more than a little upset by the discovery.

“Water leaked down around the door and inside the walls,” he explained. “Maybe before the new roof was put on.”

“But that was several years ago.”

“I imagine if you asked your dad, he’d tell you the roof was leaking before they replaced it.”

“Why wasn’t it discovered then?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe because they were concerned about the roof and didn’t realize it may have leaked into the wall?”

“What made you suspect it?”

“For one thing, it’s an old house. I usually check around doors and windows for that very thing. In this case, though, I noticed the first night I was there, that the door wouldn’t close right.”

“Same as the back door here?”

“Could be, but I don’t think so. There are other reasons for doors not closing. Although, you could be right, since there appears to have been a leak in this roof too.”

“How much will it cost to fix it?” I cringed inwardly.

“Unfortunately, I can’t tell you until I get in there and look at it to see the extent of the damage. The door should probably be replaced. It looks like an original door. It’s pretty narrow and might be hard to replace. To put a new, wider door in, you’d have to cut out the walls a bit and that may take care of the dry rot...so, a new door, lumber...I’d say maybe $400.”

“That’s more than I thought it would be.”

“Yeah, but it should be done sooner rather than later, before the wall turns to mush and collapses. It doesn’t have to be a new door. Habitat for Humanity has a discount home-improvement outlet that sells donated building material, appliances, furniture and other stuff. And there are other places that sell salvaged or reusable materials. They usually have doors, windows, cabinets, plumbing fixtures, lumber, flooring, hardware, bricks, and fencing. Some also have furniture, appliances, lighting fixtures, and even antique fixtures.”

“Wow. I’d like to visit one and see what they have. Maybe I could find something for the bookstore too, like old bookstands or something cool like that.”

“Good idea.” Gib nodded. “And you know, Jordie, not everything that needs fixing will be costly. In fact, remember when I asked to use the bathroom last night?”

“Yeah?”

“That was an excuse to check things out inside the house a bit too. You’ve probably noticed the faucet in there spits out the side and less water comes out than it used to?”

I nodded.

“It’s probably clogged. I could easily fix that by cleaning it with an old toothbrush.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. I know this list
