There were reporters waiting outside the precinct when they arrived. Constable Cho grabbed Maya from the back, shielding her with a folder as they descended on them with microphones and cameras. “Nothing for the press today!” Constable Cho shouted, all but pushing Maya into the police station. “Go find something else to cover for a change!”

The officer Maya recognized as Pete met them by the doors. “Damn vultures,” he said with a laugh. “You know how it is. Do we have a suspect for real? That’ll give them something to feast on.”

“Let her fill in those details,” Constable Cho said. “And get someone to swat those reporters away with a broom or something, because I can’t have them discovering we have a missing child on top of all these.” It was amazing how quickly her tone had changed from when she thought they were dealing with a random burglary. She stepped away while Pete led Maya to the interview room.

“Do I have to call a lawyer?” Maya asked nervously.

Pete smiled. “You’re not a suspect. We just need you to go over everything in detail to help us find your ex-husband in case he causes more harm.”

“I wasn’t trying to protect him,” Maya said. “I didn’t put two and two together until this morning. What the coroner said…that was the first time I thought about him in hours. I’m sorry.”

Pete nodded understandingly. “You can call a lawyer if you want. That’ll delay everything. If finding Jackson is the most important thing, then we’d appreciate your cooperation.”

“He won’t hurt him,” Maya said. “Jag and children…he loves children. That’s why he hates that I don’t. I mean…” She gestured at her belly. “I’m pregnant with his child, and I don’t want it. Never wanted it. He tricked me, you see? I hope you’re recording this so you can’t say I told you. The son of a bitch tricked me into carrying his child. I’ve been meaning to get an abortion, but I’m on a wait list. The clinics are all full.”

Pete nodded again. “I understand.”

Maya shook his head. “No, you don’t. He…he got a doctor to believe his bullshit. Something about my mental health. They kept me against my will and forced me to take meds. And then Paul—Paul’s butler arrived to pick me up, but I didn’t want him to see me like that. I didn’t want to hear him blame me for…for getting myself into that position. Most people would say I wanted it, and Paul, well—he wouldn’t believe me. I’m still married to Jag, I didn’t want to go through the trouble of a divorce until I was financially capable. I relied on him for everything.”

She rattled on about the events of the last twenty-four hours. As she did so, she checked her pockets for the photograph she found in the abandoned school and realized it was missing. She made the quick decision to leave out her story of the attacker in the school. It might have been Jag, but she was afraid that mentioning it would cause them to doubt everything in her statement.
