CLARA

I debated whether I should change my outfit before heading to dinner with Emmette. I’d told him that I needed to visit my sister, but when I called her house, Jeff told me that Kelly was taking a nap. That meant I had some time to myself. I decided that I didn’t want to look like I was dressing up for Emmette. So, I just reapplied my lipstick and headed to the restaurant.

It was the Thai place he’d mentioned before. The décor was bare bones. The clientele was mostly Thai, which I knew meant that the food would be good. He’d ordered cucumber lemonades for both of us. “I hope you don’t find it presumptuous that I got you a drink. But I figured you wouldn’t want anything alcoholic.”

It was definitely a better choice than the Absinthe. “How is Kelly doing?” he asked.

“Fine. She’s back at home resting.”

“Glad to hear it. I really admire how close you are to your sister.”

“Sisters.” I corrected.

“How many of you are there?” He wondered.

“Four of us – me and my three sibs.”

“And you all get along?”

“For the most part. Sometimes we get on each other’s nerves, but we always manage to work things out. As corny as it sounds, they’re my best friends.”

“That doesn’t sound corny at all. It seems wonderful.” he mused, looking a little wistful. This sentimental side of him was making me uncomfortable – because I liked it. I was worried that if he kept it up, I’d start to let my guard down. So, I changed the subject.

“This is supposed to be a victory celebration. We should talk about the case.”

“Blake is thrilled,” he told me. “And he thinks that he’ll eventually be able to have a civil relationship with his ex, once the dust settles.”

“That would be best for the children,” I said sincerely. “I hope that it happens.”

“I was just buttering you up when I said that you were a major reason why we prevailed. You have great legal instincts.”

“Thanks,” I said, wondering where this was going. “I just tried to stay focused on the children. I know that Blake was the client, but they were the ones I cared most about.”

“Because you’re all about family.”

“Aren’t most people?” I wondered.

“I suppose,” he said tersely.

“Judging by the tone in your voice you don’t,” I observed.

“The "It's not that I don't value family as a general concept. It's that I don't value my particular family."

"Why not?" I wondered.

"I guess it's probably a bit of a cliche: the family law attorney with a dysfunctional family," he mused. "My parents are married, but they shouldn't be. For as long as I can remember, they've never gotten along. When I was a kid they used me as a weapon, each trying to turn me against the other. It made my childhood hell."
