An hour later, I walked through the backdoor hoping my mother would not be the first person I would see. So much for hoping, I should have prayed really hard because the look on her face increased the guilt I was already feeling.
“Eric thee third, your father was supposed to take his medicine 30 minutes ago and you walk in this house a whole hour after the time I told you to be here. What has gotten into you lately?” my mother wanted to know.
“Nothing, my fault, Ma. I wasn’t that close to home…”
“But I called you earlier in the day, so you should have been making your way home, Eric. Disappointing, just disappointing! If I didn’t know any better, I believe my son doesn’t care about his father,” my mother told me, looking at me with sad eyes. That is when I noticed the gray hair around her hairline, making her look older than her 50 years.
“I had to cancel my hair appointment,” she fussed and I understood why I could see her gray soldiers. “Are you listening to me?”
“Leave him alone, Angie,” my father smiled in my direction. “Hey, son, I’m fine; your mama fusses too much.”
My father has no idea how badly I wanted to agree with him, but I didn’t take a chance on voicing my thoughts. The way my mother was throwing side-eye to the both of us, I decided not to say a word about it.
“So, Pops, you’re almost looking like your old pictures. You feeling all right?”
“Better than I have in years and I’ve got to keep it that way if I want to live, right, honey?” he addressed my mother and only received a threatening look. “Guess you know that means I will,” my father chuckled, looking better than he has in years.
“Son, I’m going to need you to take me shopping for a couple of new suits next week. I’m smaller than my “not as fat as I usually am” suits,” Pops joked and we laughed together.
“Dinner and your medicine, Eric,” Mom said placing a plate of steamed vegetables on the kitchen table. “We all have to change our eating habits around here.”
“I’m not hungry,” I frowned at my father’s plate.
My father looked at his plate and said, “Have a seat and talk to your old man anyway, son. Who has your nose open?”
“Aw, Pops, c’mon…”
“Don’t worry, I’ll leave you two to it. All I know is, he’d better be careful and…” my mother’s voice trailed behind her into the living room.
“You’ve got to stop upsetting your mother, you know that, don’t you?” my father asked before putting a forkful of vegetables into his mouth, then wiping it with a napkin. “She thinks you’ve gone and got with the wrong crowd, but I know it’s a young lady. So…who is she?”
“A teacher at the school where I work,” I smiled, revealing my true feelings.
“Humph…she must be more than good looking any time you’re shucking your responsibilities.”
“She’s cool peoples, you know. And I’ve only been late a few times here and there, my bad.
