Chapter Five

Mace approached Parker’s hospital door with faltering steps. He didn’t want to see Parker with tubes coming out of him or smell the stench of death upon his body. Then again, he had to in order to save his life.

He took a deep breath and proceeded forward, coming to a halt as he saw the man he loved for the first time since the accident. He was almost unrecognizable with all the bruising and medical tape practically everywhere on his body. His head was wrapped up twice its normal size and held immobile with some type of wheel looking contraption. A blue tube was taped into his mouth and the respirator made a swooshing sound with each breath.

Mace couldn’t seem to stop himself from shaking. At that moment, he agreed with Parker’s parents. This was no way to live and according to human medicine, Parker himself was long gone. What was left was the shell of his body. And holding onto him was for the benefit of the living, not for Parker at all.

Mace closed his eyes and very quickly opened his senses, letting them brush along Parker’s battered body. He felt an answering spark, faint but there. Mace smiled and pulled back. Parker’s soul still lingered inside.

“Can I get you anything?”

Mace started and turned, seeing the night nurse. She had a compassionate look upon her face as she stared at him.

“Um, no,” he said, clearing his voice.

She nodded in understanding. “Well, it should be a calm night so I promise not to disturb you too much.”

“Okay.”

She turned to leave, hesitated for a moment, and turned back around. “I’m very sorry for your loss. It was such a terrible freak accident.”

“Yes.”

He realized he was being very monosyllabic but he truthfully couldn’t say too much more. His throat burned from his unshed tears.

“If you need anything, just buzz.”

He nodded and she turned and left, closing the door behind her. Mace locked it before collapsing in the chair next to Parker and took his hand in his, being careful not to disturb the sensor and IV.

“Why, Parker? Why did this happen?”

With his free hand he traced the perfect line of Parker’s nose. He half wondered what happened to his glasses.

“I’m going to save your life, but once I do, I’ll have to leave Earth. Leave you behind. But I’d rather know you’re alive out there somewhere then continue on without you.”

Tears welled up in his eyes and trickled down his cheeks.

“I’ll never love another person. No matter where I go, I’ll always be with you in spirit.”

He grabbed a tissue and wiped his eyes before settling back in the chair. Taking a deep breath, he cleared his mind and opened his other senses once again, the ones humans haven’t quite mastered yet. Beneath his fingers he was able to deconstruct the atoms of the chair, going through each molecule and learning how it was constructed. Next he moved to the bed, doing the same thing, letting his spirit energy touch flow outward.
