“Come with me,” he said, his voice sharper than normal. “Let’s see what the inside is like.”

The inside, I’m sorry to say, wasn’t much of an improvement. The thick stone walls blocked the icy wind but that was about all. If anything, it was colder inside than out as the massive fireplaces sat dark. The only light was what seeped in from the tiny windows near the twenty-foot ceiling and it dissipated well before it reached the floor below.

Harry dropped his travel bag at the door and reached for a light switch, but nothing happened. He released a rather inventive string of curses under his breath and dug through a cabinet to the side of the door, pulling out two tarnished silver chambersticks and a box of emergency candles. He threaded one into each holder and, with a quick huff of breath, they flared to life. Harry set one flickering light on the table and, hooking his finger through the loop on the other, started for the back of the room.
