I shrugged off the jacket of my fire suit and hung it on the hook. I was exhausted and everything hurt. I was sweaty and covered in ashes and needed to take a shower before going home, but as I neared the bathroom I saw Dan heading that way. Normally I wouldn’t give him a second thought, but after the shift I’d had, I just didn’t have it in me to deal with anything else. I felt completely drained.
Turning around, I pulled my keys out of my pocket and headed outside. I knew my truck was going to smell like smoke for a long time, but I didn’t care. My only thought was to get away.
Some of the guys were going to the bar around the corner for drinks, but I wasn’t in the mood to be around a crowd. It had been one of the worst shifts I had ever experienced on the job and I needed some time to process everything.
I drove down the darkened streets lost in my own thoughts, not really caring where I ended up. After a while, I stopped at a red light and wiped the tears from my eyes. As I waited for the light to change, I finally took notice of my surroundings and was surprised to see that I was almost to Carter’s apartment building. I guess when my head became too full with the terrible images from earlier, my heart took over, knowing exactly what I needed.
I pulled up in front of his building and climbed out, praying that he was home. I made my way to his door and knocked. He swung the door open and his happy look of surprise soon turned into worry as he took in my condition. “Ryan, what’s wrong, baby?”
He reached for me and then I was in his arms and I was sobbing into his shoulder. I don’t remember him getting me inside or shutting the door. All I could concentrate on was the feel of his warm arms wrapped around me and his hands rubbing soothing circles across my back. I don’t know how long we stood there, but he held me until I was cried out and all that remained was my gentle hiccups as I calmed back down. Carter was exactly what I had needed. He was my comfort.
I took a deep breath and wiped my eyes with trembling hands. “Thank you. I’m sorry about that, but thank you.”
His eyes were filled with worry, but he gave me a beautiful smile that made my heart melt. “Don’t ever apologize for coming to me if you need something. I want to be that person for you.”
“You are,” I answered quietly as he smoothed his hand over my cheek. I nuzzled into his warm palm. “Would it be alright if I took a shower here?”
“Of course. Do you mind if I join you? I want to hold you some more.”
“That sounds perfect,” I said with a little smile. I appreciated that he hadn’t demanded answers from me right away.
