Chapter

7

Life gradually drifted into a regular pattern. His rages became less frequent. I did most of the shopping, though he still showed me the way to start with. After a while he just took me as far as the locked door. He never gave me the key. Only occasionally did he go out alone. I tried not to question him, that only upset him, or he flew into a rage. But he either calmed down quite quickly, or he raged on the organ. We did the normal chores around the home between us. We exercised in his strange, dark world, or he played and tried to teach me to sing.

One day he had been out. He came back in an agitated state.

“What on earth is the matter?”

I had never seen him in that mood before. He sat me down on the couch, without even stopping to remove his mask. He came out with the statement, “We are going to have to leave here.” “What do you mean?”

Though it was far from ideal, I had got quite used to being there.

“The hotel has been sold. There is going to be extensive alterations to the building. We are no longer safe here.”

I looked at him in horror, not knowing what to say.

“We must take what we can and leave straight away.”

“But where will we go?”

“I do not know,” then in a slightly calmer voice he said, “I have had to live on my wits before, but I have never had a wife to come along before.” “Maybe we were wrong after all.”

He flung his arms round me, suddenly he was quite emotional again.

“No, my darling, I have loved being with you.” He hesitated, then added, “I will find a way. I will keep you safe somehow.”

Next day we had collected our few belongings and left. Locking the little outside door behind us. Then as we stepped out into the street, he turned to me and said,

“There is one thing that breaks my heart to leave behind, that is the organ. At least I will never leave you behind my darling. Please trust me and we will always stay together.”

He seemed to know where we were going, I just scurried along behind. I found myself in the entrance hall of a railway station. Eldritch pressed some money into my hand saying,

“Go to the ticket office, over there, ask for two tickets to (a place I had never heard of)”

When I looked puzzled, he whispered impatiently, “There, look, at the top of the board.”

I hurried to the ticket office and got the tickets. It is amazing what you can do if you are frightened enough. I returned to Eldritch.

“Come we will wait in the waiting room. Come sit in the corner. Kiss me and never let go.”

Considering how strange Eldritch’s appearance was, it was amazing how he could blend in or just disappear. Sometimes I would lose him myself and he would come back and grab me. There was a short time when we were sitting alone in a carriage, he said to me, “You make it harder to keep out of sight.
