Chapter Eighteen
The smell of garlic and soy sauce was getting stronger, but Henry was too excited to think about food. He leaned over the oak tabletop, his elbows resting on it, and cradled his chin in his hand. âWhere was the house party?â
Ryan shrugged. âI donât know.â
âHad you been there before?â
He shook his head.
âDo you know whose house it was?â
Ryan continued to scratch his thumbnail with his finger. âNo. Just heard it was some guy called Freddie.â
Henry felt his cheek twitch. He was getting close to something, but he wasnât quite sure what. âHave you met Freddie?â
He nodded.
âWhat does he look like?â
He shrugged. âBlonde. Quite tall. Heâs old. Like, thirty or forty.â
âWhat does he do?â
âHe says heâs a DJ, but he runs some business or something.â
âIs he local?â
He nodded. âYeah, heâs from around here. He said heâs from Leeds.â
âHow did you get to the party? Itâs not easy getting up there.â
He shrugged as if he couldnât remember. âIt was a taxi, or maybe Will drove, I canât remember.â
âWhere did you meet William?â
âIn Addingham. Iâd been at a party here, one of my matesâ, then Will picked me up.â He nodded like he was remembering. âHe drove. There were three of us.â
âThree?â
âMe, Will, and Louise.â
âLouise? Isnât she someone William worked with?â
He nodded.
âAt the party, who did you spend your time with?â
Ryan shrugged again. âIâve no idea. I was out of it.â
Becky Miller tutted in the far corner of the kitchen, where she was leaning against one of the worktops, listening.
Ryan seemed to remember she was there and straightened up in his chair.
âDid anything happen at the party?â Henry asked.
Ryan shook his head.
âHow did you get home?â
âI think I called an Uber around nine in the morning. I was still awake but wanted to get home and sleep in my own bed.â
âCan you prove you got a taxi? In case the police ask?â
Ryan looked at him like it was a stupid question. âIt was an Uber, thereâll be proof on the app.â
Henry nodded as if he already knew that. âWas William still at the party when you left?â Henry asked, but he already knew the answer to this, as heâd found Williamâs body just before 10 a.m.
Ryan shrugged. âDonât think so.â
âYou hadnât seen him throughout the party?â
He shrugged. âAs I said, I canât remember much.â
Henry looked into his bloodshot eyes and wondered if he could believe him or not. Then he changed tack. âWhat about Louise, did she leave the party with you?â
He shook his head. âI left on my own.â
âOh, what happened to her?â
âShe stayed, I think.â He looked down at the tabletop.
âWere she and William together or anything?â
âI donât know.â He shrugged. âYouâll have to ask her about that.â
Henry decided he would. âSo, between you entering the party with William and you leaving, you canât say at what point William left?â
He seemed to give it some thought, then he shook his head like it was a sum too difficult for him to work out. âNo idea.â
âYou didnât hear any arguments or see a fight or anything?â Henry asked, over the banging of pans.
