Chapter 20
âWhat would you know about my father, girl?â Lucy eyed Nora.
She looked to her mother for support. Instead, Arnette was nodding in agreement.
âWere you and Brockwell having an affair?â Watson asked.
Arnette avoided his gaze. âIf thatâs what you want to call it. He was so charming at first, and then he changed.â
âMama! Do you mean he forced you?â Lucy leaned over, taking her motherâs hand. âWhy didnât you tell me?â
âNo. I was willing, even though he was married. There was just something about him. He wouldnât stop asking .... Iâm ashamed to even talk about it now.â
Nora had a hard time believing Arnette had an affair with a married man. Adam Brockwell must have had some impressive powers of seduction. Maybe he was like his son, who seemed to be a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Sometimes charming, sometimes selfish and ruthless.
âYou donât know. You just couldnât know, baby. Mr. Brockwell was a rich man. I was the housekeeper. With dreams of working my way through college. He was married and had the cutest little boy. His wife was what I would call a society blonde. Lots of money and the kind of activities only rich women partake in. Her world and mine were so different. I went to classes and she went to lunches at the club.â
âWas that Coreyâs mother?â
âSure was. She was different from the rest of the women in town. She had as much money as he did. Brockwellâs daddy looked at all the local pickings and thought they were just a bunch of gold diggers. Coreyâs mama was nothing of the sort. It was a good marriage for the Brockwells, both financially and socially.â
Lucy crossed her arms, amazed at her motherâs words. âI never knew you went to college.â
âFor a little bit, until I had you anyway. Mr. Brockwell and his wife seemed so much in love. He gave her any little thing she wanted. Jewelry, a car, anything at all. Both of their bank accounts were pretty healthy at that time. The warehouse operation took off and the whole town spoke of him like he was some sort of hero out of a comic book.â
âSo, why do you hate him so much?â Lucy asked.
âBecause of what he did, baby. Iâm going to try to explain this to you. I should have told you years ago, but itâs not something Iâm proud of.â
Lucy shifted uncomfortably as her eyes went to the floor.
âI guess it all started when I was working in the house. I was never one to keep my mouth shut. Every once in a while, I spouted off about one thing or another, and the thing that reeled me in was he laughed at my jokes. He thought I was funny. I was just the housekeeper. I told him how goofy the milkman looked in the morning and Mr. Brockwell just laughed and laughed, like I was some kind of comedian. I was flattered. Then they were decorating the little boyâs room. His wife wanted a circus theme.
