Chapter 14
It was Monday morning when to my pleasant surprise Toby phoned. âI hadnât expected to hear from you so soon, how are you?â
âIâm fine thanks. Listen, Iâve borrowed Annâs diary from evidence. If you want to look at it, itâll have to be today. How you fixed?â
âToday will be great, where and what time?â
We agreed to meet in Woodford. Not the Italian restaurant but a greasy spoon café. Far enough away from his stamping ground and an easy journey for me. Lunch would be a sandwich.
He was already there when I arrived and he greeted me warmly. It made me wonder if there was some other motive or reason behind this meeting. There was. And, as he explained, it was all to do with his ambition. His determination to drive his already successful career as far as he could.
âI want to co-operate with you as much as I can on the Sharp case and, Iâll be honest with you, I have a selfish motive. Iâm in line for promotion and a successful conclusion to it will greatly enhance my prospects.â
I admired his honesty. âWell, Iâve already told you, if I get anything Iâll gladly turn it over to you. But, whatâs so important about this case?â
âCome on Laura, given the job Ann Sharp held down and the prominent people she was involved with, you already know how sensitive this could all be.â
âAh! Now I see. The police would like to oblige the establishment by sweeping as much as possible under the carpet. Mustnât embarrass the Right Honorables.â
âNo, that isnât what Iâm saying. Itâs just that, itâs just...oh sod it! Youâre right of course. Although, I canât imagine why you would mistrust the establishment to that degree.â
We both had a laugh at this.
âToby, my only interest is to find out who ordered the hit on Ann. Thatâs why my client has retained me. If I manage to do that, everything will happen through you. You make the arrest, you take the credit. And, if you want to say you broke the case thanks to one of your informants, someone you wonât be able to name, thatâll be OK with me. Iâll be very happy to be left out altogether.â
He was about to speak but I wanted to ask something else.
âWhat makes you think Iâll be able to make headway with this? I mean I realize youâre more constrained by protocol but I donât have anything like your resources. Not only that, I donât have feet on the ground. Itâs just little old me.â
âOh no it isnât! Donât think Iâm unaware of your trips to the Fox & Hounds. That is, the trips you made with Jim. Look, as far as Iâm concerned, youâre a very good investigator. Youâre resourceful, even though you donât have a great deal of back-up. But, more than anything, I trust you and thatâs very important.â
I was touched by this but not wanting to go all gooey, I changed the subject and asked about Annâs diary. Without saying anything he reached into his pocket and passed me a thick envelope.
