Amy woke up early on Thanksgiving Day and lay in bed staring at the clock as the time approached seven. A few seconds after the digits changed to 6:59 she reached over and shut off the alarm. The last thing she wanted to hear was that buzzing. She had enough irritating things in her life already.

She walked into the kitchen and spent half an hour preparing a small turkey and setting out side dishes like potatoes, the makings for a green bean casserole, stuffing, and rolls. She was making an early dinner for herself, Jeremy, and Boyd. They would be at her apartment around one.

Once the turkey was in the oven she spent another half hour in the bathroom showering and getting ready. Fixing her hair, she stared at herself in the mirror and realized she had zero enthusiasm for any of this.

“Oh, Boyd, why do you have to make everything harder?” she said to herself. “First that stupid accident and then your stupid pills and now you can’t keep it together. I mean, you can’t even drive. I have to make dinner and then go pick you up? What is that all about? What would Mom and Dad say?”

Talking to herself was something she did a lot, she realized. Vocalizing her problems helped, and since Jeremy was never around, she ended up talking to herself most of the time. She curled her hair and looked at herself in the mirror.

“And what the hell was that kiss all about last night? Is that who you are? Jumping from guy to guy, making sure you have one ready in case one doesn’t work out? And let’s be honest, did you need Missy to tell you that Tim had feelings for you? Was that some big secret?”

She went through the rest of her routine and walked back into the bedroom to get dressed. There was a nice dress in her closet she’d bought especially for the holidays. She pulled it out and looked at it. It was tan with a splash of red, and when she’d bought it she’d wanted to look nice for the families. Now, she put it back in the closet. If Boyd and Jeremy couldn’t put forth any more effort than they had been into considering her feelings, she wasn’t wearing anything more complicated than sweatpants.

Frank woke up with pale sunlight in his face. He was stiff and realized he wasn’t under any blankets and was still in the jeans and Rocco’s Pizza t-shirt he’d worn to work the previous night. The clock said 8:37 a.m. He sat straight up and his feet hit the floor when he realized he had to meet Skillet.

“Boyd?” he said. “Boyd, you make it in last night, man? We have to go see Skillet this morning.”

Boyd’s room was still empty. Frank shook his head and wandered into the bathroom to get cleaned up for dinner at his mom’s house. Twenty minutes later, he was showered and shaved. His mom insisted on him being cleaned up for holiday dinners.
