Chapter 46

Jason Hunter

London Office

Tuesday 4 th August

“Morning, Mr Hunter.”

“Morning, Lucy. How are you?”

“Very good, thank you.”

She swivelled her chair, got up and walked around her desk, following me into my office. She was carrying a clipboard piled high with reports.

“The closing report for Montoya,” she said, dropping one of the files onto my desk. I slipped out of my suit jacket and hung it on the coat stand. “Very successful.” She dropped another file on my desk, this one thicker. “A new contract for Kendrick.” She dropped a third. “A new application for the current job opening.” And then a fourth. “And I believe this is from Captain Zsaldos, nothing new.” The large pile was overwhelming, and I sucked in a deep breath, fighting the feeling of drowning.

“Do you have any good news for me?” I asked desperately.

“Yes. Adam hasn’t asked to see you, and Detective Irons has called. She’s running late.”

“Right,” I muttered, collapsing into my seat. “Remind me how that’s meant to be good news?”

“Well, it gives you time to prepare and wipe that awful dazed look off your face.”

“Thanks,” I mumbled.

“I don’t mean to be rude, Jason –”

“Please, Lucy. I couldn’t imagine you doing such a thing,” I replied sarcastically. She smiled sweetly at me. A fake smile, but it was appreciated just the same.

“You look a little haggard.”

“It was a late one.”

“Was it now?” she smiled coyly.

“Don’t you have work to do?”

Lucy smiled and then left, carefully closing the door behind her.

I sent a text to one of my most experienced boys, Isaac, for an update on the current situation at Gromov’s house. He replied almost instantly and it seemed that Gromov’s condition had improved significantly; he was almost ready to come home. They were prepping for his return and would keep me in the loop.

Before I knew what had happened, a short brunette woman stormed into my office, stopping opposite me with her hands on her hips. Her expression was unreadable.

“I’m sorry Jason, she just barged right past.” Lucy was standing in the doorway, an apologetic look on her face. “Shall I call security?”

“You know, for a security firm, your building isn’t very secure,” said the brunette.

“No, it’s fine,” I said and waved a hand in Lucy’s direction. She shot a look of contempt towards the other woman and left, closing the door behind her.

“Hi Diane,” I said, and then gestured to the seat on the other side of my desk. “What can I do for you?”

“I just needed to drop off Stacey’s schedule for the next few weeks. She’s decided to start doing some of her appearances again.”

“What?”

“I know, but it’s a necessary evil unfortunately. I’m sure you can sort something?”

“Sure, sure,” I said, slightly distracted by the piece of paper she handed me. I ran my eyes along the calendar, mentally calculating how difficult it would be to protect her at all these events.

“How many are here?”

“We’ve got 6 over the next three weeks, not including the next Grand Prix in Belgium on the 23rd.
